The lava version is good but i still like the greenish colours on this one, perhaps some sort of patchy crystalline rock with a green glow.
really like ur rocks !

Nice lighting on the foreground rocks, lovin it!
I agree with Devin-Busha somewhat, about the big rock, so maybe bring down the contrasty areas on the sides down a teensy bit, but I actually really like that rock and shape so don't lose it. I think you have to define the mid ground a bit more to get a sense of what it is...is it holey rock with steam coming through, is it a trench shrouded in fog etc? You may want to add a slight hint of stuff in the mist in the distance but not too much.

Another thought I had was that the figure is hindering the composition a bit by being a large and vertical block in the nice gentle diagonal you have going. A thought I had was you could shrink him/her right down to a 5th/4th the size and had a silhouette basically standing on the rock (where his left elbow is now), looking across/down the chasm or something. This might help the composition flow a bit better but you would have to be happy with it changing the scale of the image completely though. IMHO it would make it grand and even more awesome!!!

Loving this so far man. In my opinion, you've got a really great foreground going on, but your mid-ground and background are kind of blurred together. The large middle rock structure in the background is immediately where my eyes goes after the character. It's nearly as in focus as the objects in the foreground, which I think is one of the things screwing with your depth here.

Id suggest pushing it back more with some atmospheric perspective, then maybe introducing some simple shapes into the mid ground (They could be protruding through the fog) so that you get a nice 1,2,3 read. Goodluck man! I can't wait to see how this turns out.

I like is so far.
Um, is that a pen?

It looks like its falling off at the right and you have all of this ambiguous space in the middle. I would definitely put some clouds in the distance. Also maybe maybe lower the line of rocks at the fore and move the character an inch to the left.

The guy could be looking down at some sort of lava cauldron, or something emmitting light. Great job done so far!

this is prob too late but... maybe a coloured light in the distance is drawing the character towards it, leading them somewhere.
either way, looks cool so far (=

That foggy pit has a nice underlit-dry-ice feel to it that I've never seen in a painting before. If I were painting this I might include a pack of lupine creatures lurking in the fog, the composition makes it difficult to fill the space over the human's head without it looking awkward though. Good luck with whatever you decide on.
