Yes. It's been a while. I read it about the same time the movie came out.

I was a little shocked by how different they were. Only seem to be distantly related. Both interesting but as usually I like the book better, more science and fewer magical rocks.

I almost always enjoy the book better than the movie. But then I'm a writer. I was probably the only 6th grader with the complete Zane Grey collection!

I'm still having trouble with eyes. They are the most expressive part of the body, and the easiest for my to mess up.

Yeah, things like that can be tricky.

Just watched this movie again, recently. Still hasn't lost its charm.
Don Bluth had a good thing going. I respect him for his decision to defect from Disney when he didn't like the way things were going over there. That was a ballsy move to break away from and compete with the biggest animation powerhouse in the world at the time. (There's something kind of American about that, too. Makes one think of the American Patriots who told the King of England to shove it when he tried to tax them without representation, or of the Confederates who seceded from the industrial might of the Union when their rights were being threatened.) He's one of the main influences on my drawing style.
I hope to get to meet him, some day.

My favorite aspect of his movies is they are original. He doesn't just twist an existing fairy tale to fit a template. He took a meaningless acronym (NIMH) and wrote a story about it. How brilliant is that?

He does have a certain originality, yes, but The Secret of NIMH is actually based on a book titled Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, NIMH standing for National Institute of Mental Health. He is brilliant too, yes. He respects the viewers enough to trust them with darker subject matter and his use of back-lighting is pioneer-like.
And I see what you're hinting at when you say "twisting an existing fairy tale". Disney's gotten away with that for far too long.

Yes I know it is, I have the book. What i meant was , he's willing to stick his neck out and do an untried story. The book won a Peabody, but it was never a big hit until he made it into a movie. An American Tale was another one with an untried story. And all most folks knew about Balto was the statue in Central Park. All in all, He's probably my favorite cartoon producer.

I think I see what you're saying. Balto was another beautiful movie (albeit a little twisted, history-wise). All Dogs Go To Heaven is another one of my favorites. An American Tale, too. Gosh, most of Bluth's stuff is good.
Yeah, Bluth is up there with my favorites, too. I hope I get to meet him some day and say "Bluth, you magnificent bastard! I read your book!"

Oh my word this is beautiful! I LOVED this movie as a kid, which actually surprises me now because it's kinda dark. I should totally watch it again soon!

It's a kind of a "Mommy" movie. If you like mommy movies, you might like "Wolf Children". It's also on my list. Warning: it's a 2-hankie job. It's about a Japanese were-wolf. But Japanese were-wolves are different than western vampire types. In Japanese folk lore, were-wolves were simply shape-shifters and not demonic. Every furry artist worth his/her salt should watch "Wolf Children".
