Description

For Christmas J bought me my very own Intuos tablet, which has been gathering dust during my art drought. At last, I busted it out, and wouldn’t you know it, it’s actually fun as shit! This is my first thing done entirely on a tablet, so it’s rough, but still pretty cool.

I think I like Kristoff so much because he reminds me of J. I’m fond of big, goofy, warmhearted, big-nosed Nordic types. J also narrates for our dog, and if he had a reindeer, guaranteed he would write ballads about how everybody sucks except for reindeers.

Also, Wikipedia tells me that Kristoff's family name is apparently Bjorgman, bjorg being an old Norse word meaning help/salvation. That's nice!

Aah, but that's a GOOD thing! No face is completely symmetrical - except for artificially created ones, of course. I think Kristoff looks even better that way.

If I was a dude, probably would have it. Unfortunately, the women of my family are all Hobbits. It's sad when I'm like, third tallest chick in a family just chock full of women. Then men have it easy. I think the shortest is my uncle Mike, and he's 5'8".

Aww, no! I loved Anna, I really did. And Hans was definitely interesting -- I keep looking at his motivations and actions, coming up befuddled. Why? Why, Hans?

But no, Kristoff was the best. I see you in them elfin boots, eatin' carrots, yeah. Doin' your thing.

I agree re: Hans.  When I first saw the movie...

[SPOILERS ahead ]

...that sudden flip seemed to come out of left field... but then, I could see how everything he did up to that point was an act, to make the people think he'd honestly cared about Anna and Elsa, and that he never intended to take the throne -- the responsibility just fell to him.

I <3 Anna, too; I freakin' LOVE that the "act of true love" turned out to be her saving Elsa (and herself) instead of needing a dude to save her.  Disney is getting really good with its portrayal of female characters lately.

Can I tell you, I thought for a minute it was going to be Olaf who saved Anna. He was going to give his frozen little life for her. That would've been great, too! What you think is some throwaway comedy relief character ends up sacrificing himself for our hero. But I also have a sister I love more than air, so I think it happened exactly right.

Yeah, I was thinking, MOST of the stuff Hans did didn't seem to serve his selfish agenda. He made sure the people didn't freeze or starve! He let everybody into the castle. However, I'm still wondering why he wanted to kill Anna, because that made zero sense. He would still have been king, but he'd've been king ALONE, you know? That's a troubling bit.

*ALL THE SPOILERS*
*I confess, right off the bat, I may have thought a little too much about this*

I've seen Frozen three times (so far), and Hans has been under close scrutiny all three times. Myself and a friend have come up with a theory, which I'd like to share here: the scene where Hans does a face-heel turn is completely out of character for him, but necessary to move the story along.

We get so little time with Hans, everything he does or says carries a lot of weight. Some examples:
In his intro scene, it is made clear that Hans feels genuine attraction/affection for Anna. Nobody smiles a big daffy smile (while swimming in full uniform in a fjord) over a girl they simply intend to manipulate.
He did his utmost to protect Elsa even though, ultimately, it was probably against his best interests. He could have easily allowed Elsa to destroy those Weselton minions and denounced her as dangerous and unfit to rule, then married Anna with little fuss. (tying into my theory, though: if Elsa ~had~ destroyed those guys, we as the audience would like her so much less, detracting from the powerful reunion between the sisters.)
Everything he did may have been calculated, but there is little doubt in my mind that he would have actually made a pretty good king. Decisive, focused, determined to take care of the people of Arendelle (especially since he was banking on them being HIS people someday).

On to the betrayal/abrupt change in demeanor: Hans ~could~ have just kissed Anna. He could have done his best and failed; tried to have forced an immediate marriage even though Anna would be confused, questioning his love, and dying. Or he could have ultimately cut his losses and tried a different kingdom. Or perhaps, he could have kissed Anna and succeeded! I've already mentioned that he sincerely liked her. But think about that:

If Hans saved Anna with an act of true love, where does that leave Elsa? Elsa was locked away, still not in control of her powers, still not on great terms with Anna, still terrified of herself. How would all of that been resolved if her sister was saved by and then married a man she did not approve of? Not to mention, Hans may truly love Anna in this scenario, but he also is in it for the crown. The audience requires a clear delineation between good and evil (think of the children!), and if Hans wins then we all get confused. But he's manipulating her! But what's the point of Kristoff, then?! (Will he hook up with Elsa over their shared love of ice?) We're also robbed of that powerful climax when Anna saves her sister, when Elsa learns that love is greater than fear, when the villain is vanquished and everyone lives happily ever after. We would not get an ending nearly as satisfying or poignant if Hans did not reveal his true motives, especially in such a despicable and heartless way.

Perhaps the Big Reveal was shocking out of necessity; as the audience, we need to believe in Anna's desperate mission to save herself through Hans, we need to feel the betrayal through her eyes, we need to sympathize with this character we love and hate the man who doomed her to die. Otherwise it would be a "don't go through that door!" sort of frustration, wouldn't it? (This is kind of a lame argument and I know it. Disney could have easily written another scene earlier showing just what Hans is really like. At this point I'm thinking out loud a bit.)

So now Hans is evil and untrustworthy, which means Anna needs a different way to melt her frozen heart, which leads to Kristoff (whom we can now root for unabashedly) and then Elsa, who, in being saved by her sister's sacrifice, ultimately saves the kingdom, her relationship with her sister, and herself. Satisfying endings for everybody!

So, umm, yeah. To reiterate: Hans needed to become evil in order for the rest of the plot to proceed as it did. It doesn't make sense for his character, but it makes sense for the story. Ta da!

This was a joy to read, I just want you to know. I love talking shop, as it were.

I feel like they wrote these two great male characters, but realized halfway through, Oh shit, we kind of need a villain, don't we? The Duke of Weselton was just a gnat, and up to that moment, the villain is actually Elsa -- Anna is our hero, and she (we) have been shut out by Elsa so far.

And you're right, I mean, clearly Hans is not a total shitbird. There's kindness in him, and compassion and generosity, and I think he did like Anna from the start. I don't know, maybe he knew it wasn't love, knew he couldn't kiss her and save her, saw his whole plan falling to pieces -- his bride was going to die either way, and the queen had irreparably fucked the kingdom that was going to be his, so why not kill her and see if that fixed anything. But how cruelly he went about that just doesn't add up, you know? Sneering that no one loved Anna, telling her he was going to murder her sister, telling Elsa she had killed her own sister and doomed the town... I don't know, I don't buy it. Is that the same guy who went sock-skating through the royal halls and busted out some sweet tandem pop n' lock with a cutie like Anna? I'm blaming some mismanaged writing.

This is not to elevate Hans to a hero. If anyone ever hurt my sister that way, it would be a goddamned bloodbath, like the Endtimes. Hans would be a smear on the prison floor. I'm just saying it don't add up.

But whatever, Kristoff is the Babe of the Year anyway. One of the best heroes Disney's ever come up with, imo. Hans can go blow a balloon.
