The book Onyx is reading is a photo collection of Victorian post-mortem photography. There's actually a lot of misconceptions about the custom of photographing dead family members. For one, most of the time people were photographed in their coffins and were almost never photographed with family members and the practice of photographing them to look alive is actually nonexistent as a trend. However mother's being photographed with their children isn't unheard of. I figured that variation was the most thematically relevant to Onyx in this instance seeing as in this story's setting touching a dead body is incredibly taboo. I figured it would be a picture he'd find particularly touching.
