This is the first of my two (2) submissions for the fav.me/d8m4o4g contest hosted by . Since they limited us to two submissions each, I figure I'll take advantage of submitting two pieces to the contest. The second will be a sculpture of the same species in this drawing: half red-shouldered macaw, half sand-cat.

I've been wanting to sculpt gryphons for a while, of varying mixes of feline/avian species. Then, a month or two ago, I came across a contest hosted by myths-and-legends.deviantart.com, wherein the theme is to create one's own gryphon/griffin. Since it was something I'd been wanting to do someday anyway, the contest was great motivation to go ahead and do a griffin. So, in trying to figure out what kind I wanted to do, I started looking up parrots and discovered an adorable species: The red-shouldered macaw is, I think, the smallest of the macaws. Originally, I was going to make the feline half a lion, but on looking up photos of lions, I realized their physiques weren't quite... cute enough. And since I already knew I love sand cats (super tough critters, but insanely cute!), I made that the feline half.
