(Smacks forehead)Of COURSE it's foreshadowing! Why else would Aang end up with the hat that Katara made for Jet while she was crushing on him?
Even back in episode ten he was hogging all of Katara's love.

I really REALLY want to know why he is wearing that hat, like really, I know it is foreshowdowing, but there must be some reason. I was cheated out of that explanation scene. (probably my biggest plot quanderings of the show)

I remember the 'pop-up' version of the series when it said "Aang stole Jet's present!"

Wow. I somehow had totally missed this, until you pointed it out.
WOW. I re-watched the episode just because it was so blatant a twist. And sure enough, it was just one second and hello Aang with the hat.

And of course, as A:TAS points out, Aang somehow doesn't notice Katara and Jet's little thing . . .

**THIS COMMENT MAY BE CONSIDERED A SPOILER IF YOU DID NOT WATCH THE PILOT EPISODE. BE WARNED. 
He was hogging (or trying to hog) all her love by episode one. His first suggestion when he met her was to ditch the overprotective brother and slide on penguins. xD
Katara: "Why are you smiling at me like that?"
Aang: Foreshadowing in the very first episode, of course! "Hem... Oh I was smiling?"
And when that line was said, Katara knew, The second he falls asleep on this bison I am taking all of his clothes off.
Not enough proof from the Pilot episode, yet? Check this:
--He got so distracted showing off for Katara on his glider and ran into Sokka's snow tower.
--He suggests they take a long trip together to the other side of the world. And mentions nothing about Sokka coming. Again, suggesting to ditch the overprotective brother.
--Aang: "I did get to meet you." *Big Smile* <
And that, my friends, is all proof from the pilot episode that Aang wants to win Katara over and hog all the love. There is some more, but I dont want to write it because this is the proof that he is hogging her love, but the other proof was foreshadowing who and who might get together, know what I'm sayin?

It might have been. If we know one thing about Bryke, is that they are very clever, and that Kataang is the DNA of the show. Like the umbrella in "The Fortuneteller", it is subtle, but there.
