how exactly do you replace the icon ?

without using any software...
open the png with preview, select all, copy
then right click on your hard drive, choose get info. on the get info menu click on the upper left icon (it'll get a small blue glow) an then do Command+V (paste)

hehehe you need something like avedesk to use it, this programs allow you to add bigger icons on your desktop with labels and stuff ^^ this thing is called "Deskmod"
