Description
The sandstone channel deposits of Wyoming's Eocene Bridger Formation often erode into bizarre shapes. As I descended into this gulley I was immediately struck by the chance shape of a lobe of sandstone. It looks like something out of one of H.R. Giger's nightmarish paintings. Viewed from any other angle, the stone is just a shapeless blob. Seen from this vantage point it looks like the Xenomorph hybrid from Alien Resurrection. It is as though the thing might come to life like a golem.Check out the Wikipedia entry for "Pareidolia" for an explanation of this phenomenon in rocks etc.
