Description First Part: In the pouring rain (Leon/Claire) - Part 01

***

"Shoes and jacket off!"
Claire had barely unlocked the door, so she gave him orders.
Secretly he had to smile, so he knew her.
Energetic, determined, determined.
So nothing had changed.
While she fired her boots into the corner and hung her jacket to dry, he got rid of his shoes and his jacket, which she immediately took from him and hung to hers.
"Also the socks!" she pointed to his wet feet and he shook his head amused for a moment, while he followed her request.
When he looked up again, she was already on her way to the kitchenette, where she purposefully aimed for the kettle.
Leon looked around her small but well-appointed apartment. Much had not changed since he had been here the last time. There were a few more photos in picture frames. A photo of Claire and her brother Chris, one of Claire with people he didn’t know, probably TerraSafe colleagues. Claire was obviously doing well, and although he was supposed to be relieved, it brought his guilty conscience back into full swing.
He was an emotional and mental wreck, here because he knew she could take some of the burden off him.
But was that fair?

"Do you want sugar in the tea?"
Her voice took him out of his mind and let him look up.
As he approached the counter and sat on one of the bar stools, Claire stretched out to get two cups from one of the upper cabinets. Her turtleneck slipped a little bit upwards and revealed the naked skin of her belly.
For a second his breath stopped before he thought of something better, stroked the clammy legs of his jeans and answered her.
"No sugar."

She nodded, put the tea bag in the cup, filled it with hot water and put the steaming drink in front of him.

"Thank you."
His eyes found hers as he reached for the cup and clutched it with both hands to absorb the warmth.
He still saw a spark of worry in her eyes, but who could blame her.

"A year Leon, no news, no sign of life and then I find you in the middle of the night in the pouring rain on my doorstep, why now?"

He rubbed a damp strand of his long hair from his face and took a deep breath.
"This is not so easy to explain."

"Give it a try."

"I..." God, it had never been hard for him to talk.
No, he could joke in the most impossible situations.
Make everything look ridiculous.
But this was something completely different.
For a brief moment he closed his eyes to gather himself, but immediately the pictures from Spain invaded him. Like a nightmare in broad daylight.
Frustrated, he clenched his hand to his fist, trying to suppress the images and emotions.

"Leon."
The touch of her hand on his brought him back into the now.

Fluttering, he opened his eyes and stared at her hand lying on his.
Gentle and soothing.
Slowly he relaxed his hand again, released his fist and pushed out the held breath.
He hadn’t even noticed he had held his breath.

"You don’t have to tell." Her voice was just a whisper.

Claire could see his inner struggle, his strife, something had happened, something that had thrown him off track. More than Racoon City and that had to mean something.
She had already felt it when she saw him standing in the rain. Leon was a charmer, he liked to flirt, even with her, although her flirting always remained on a friendly level. But there had been no trace of his charm, he had seemed rather - yes, uncertain? Leon and uncertain? That didn’t fit together.

"Thank you." A delicate almost inconspicuous smile lay on his lips.

"Not," she put on and applied light pressure with her hand. "I told you, I’m always here for you, whether you want to talk or not. We can also sit on the couch and watch a movie when you feel better..."

"I was infected..."

Claire’s eyes widened, her fingers clawing at his, her heart beating unnaturally fast in her chest.
"Oh, Leon."

"Las Plagas. Parasites. They let themselves be controlled, take away your free will."
His eyes turned to the void.

"But you’re here." She raised her other hand and put it on his cheek, forcing him to focus her.

His blue eyes looked so exhausted when they found her eyes, Claire felt her tears coming. What he had to go through and how much energy it cost him to tell her about it. To relive the nightmare because he tried to put it into words.

"You’re here," she repeated, "safe with me."

"With you," he repeated and crossed his fingers with hers.
