Description Mirrored Light

Agon likes to think he could get anything he wanted, if he cared to try.  He already has half the school worshipping him and the other half terrified, so he’s got slaves aplenty right there.  If he wants money, he just has to find a rich enough girl to sweet-talk and sleep with.  The only thing he can’t get with his irresponsible charm or with brute force is the one thing he knows he can do without—love.

He doesn’t need some bouncy broad crying at him and trying to get him to ‘mend his ways.’  He’s only thought about it a few times, but even a guy would be too troublesome, since they’re all crowing weaklings or cowering pushovers.

No, he doesn’t need any of that.

In fact, he doesn’t need the popularity or the money, either.  To hell with all of it.  He could wake up a penniless nobody tomorrow, and it wouldn’t bother him a bit.

The only thing in the world he needs is his mirror-image.

Most high school boys fantasize about being athletic, being popular, dating the prettiest girl in town…

Agon fantasizes about living in a house full of mirrors, because (in a lot of fairly inappropriate ways) he’s in love with himself.  Agon’s favorite person is, quite honestly, Agon.  Therefore (at least to his reasoning), Agon’s favorite person is also Unsui.  That’s where things get a little confusing and somewhat full of Freudian psychobabble, and Agon is too smart and too easily bored to worry about any of it past that point.  He likes the way they look, he likes the way they move, he likes the sound of their voices (even when Unsui’s yelling at him), he likes the mirrored faces they make and all the little quirks here and there that make them ‘Agon and Unsui’ together instead of just separately ‘Agon’ and ‘Unsui.’

It’s always perplexed him…

When they were very young, they were so alike…they liked the same things, wore the same clothes, did everything together, went everywhere together, thought alike, spoke alike.  Sometimes, the only way to tell them apart was by their smiles (Unsui’s smile has always been the mirror-image of Agon’s smile).  “You’re my reflection,” Unsui would say, and smile backwards.

Yet here he is, a bored and lazy wastrel at the tender age of seventeen.  And there Unsui is, all work and no play, serious, steadfast, uncomplaining (okay, so he yells a lot when Agon is late to games or doesn’t show up to appointments and things like that…but the rest of the time, it’s nary a peep), and unwilling to give up on anything.  These days, Unsui is so tranquil (aside from the scoldings) that it makes Agon antsy.  He feels like they started out with the same contents all mixed together, and settled out into separate halves as they got older, perfectly clear reflections wavering and distorting.  He feels like he’s everything Unsui isn’t—and Unsui is everything Agon can still be bothered to admire.  He feels like they’ve become ‘Agon’ and ‘Unsui,’ and it gets under his skin.

If he thinks about it long enough, he gets tempted to shave his head and make stern faces, to see what it would be like to look just like his brother again, to make the reflections perfect again.  Then he stops thinking right after, because he knows he couldn’t fool anyone anymore.

The days of being confused with Unsui are long since over.

So he clings to their differences instead, hoping that being so…opposite…will keep them together, that he somehow fills in the leftover gaps for Unsui.  He can never tell what Unsui thinks of his overreactions and his increasingly wild behavior, but he takes the scoldings as a sign that Unsui still cares what Agon is up to from one moment to the next…that he’s still devoting himself to making Agon the best.  In a world of arrogant nobodies and too-modest geniuses, Unsui is the only zero-talent that Agon has never considered trash.  Unsui’s talent is pure, complete, passionate devotion, and Agon acknowledges that his brother is a genius in that field.  To Agon, Unsui could never be trash.  If someone asked him why, he’d break that person’s arm.  If Unsui is trash, his devotion is meaningless, so Agon is trash.  If anybody ever said to Unsui’s face, “You’re trash,” Agon would grind that person into dust.

“You’re actually coming home today?” his twin says, surprised.

“Not because I don’t have a date,” he feels the need to say.  “But it’s salmon night, and I feel like having salmon today.”

Unsui smiles.

“You smile backwards.”

“Do not.  You smile backwards.”

“Nuh-uh.”

“Uh-huh.  I was smiling before you were.”

“By, like, ten seconds.  I was fucking first, so I win.”

“Don’t be crass, or I’ll feed your supper to the little kids down the street.”

“Ehhh?  Unko-chan’s too strict!”

Agon smiles as Unsui launches into a lecture about the necessity of strictness and discipline.

Yes.  He could have anything he wanted.  But he already has everything he needs.

You've captured exactly why I ADORE this pairing. Agon being the narcissistic bastard he is would love his brother for such bizarre reasons, as well as the simple fact that Unsui has and always will be there to love Agon unconditionally no matter how different they become. Unsui's dedication to his brother is probably because they've ALWAYS been together for each other, and that's simply a bond that can't be broken. I'd like to think Unsui's love is a lot more pure than Agon's, and that just makes the relationship that much more amusing.

(YES, exactly! *cheers* Agon is like a really selfish spoiled kid, and he realizes that on some level most people can't stand the 'real' him, so having Unsui still love him probably makes him incredibly happy in some hidden corner of his brain.)

(haha. ^_^ it means agon :/ --> unsui :\)

(maybe he wouldn't think it through all the way, necessarily, but i think that he's maybe not 100% self-absorbed, having an identical twin.)

A really nice piece about the relationship between the twins. I was never a really large fan of Agon but the way you wrote and described their relationship just made me go "awwwww" and gush.

(hehe. i always liked the twins, and having fairly easy access to japanese doujin and fanart only encourages my likings for strange pairings and twincest. )

I'm not quite sure how to put down my feelings about this. For one, I love it. I like the subject and how the story plays out. It's very cute, in an unconventional way. I love stories about Agon and Unsui, but they're hard to find. Second, it's such great take on their relationship. It could actually be true the way it is written out. Anyway, much love for the fic. It's GREAT!!!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Great!
So many good lines, but this is my fav:

'He feels like he’s everything Unsui isn’t—and Unsui is everything Agon can still be bothered to admire.'

The present tense was a little disturbing at first, but it fits. Nice.
*zooms off to read the others*

(yeah, a lot of people have a hard time with present tense, but it's the easiest way to make things seem immediate. i prefer it for introspective stuff like this. this one was an interesting write--i like the way it turned out, though, because of how personal it feels for the character.)
