Description For my biology class, we did a halloween-themed assignment on Death and Decay. Because I personally find focusing on the negative aspects of death too much to bear (kind of like how I can't actually stand anything I find creepy), I chose to focus on the cycle of life.

Forest fires are hugely destructive and destroy lots of life, animal and plant alike. This is the image I chose to represent my idea for this piece because while catastrophic and truly devastating, each forest fire is an example of how the flow of life continues. It can take as little as a week after a forest fire for new sprouts to start appearing. To me, a deceased cow skull resting on ashes, combined with a few little sprouts in the ash, represents this perfectly.

Mass extinction events are another way that death gives way to more life. While Iā€™m sure the dinosaurs would rather not be extinct, their extinction created a vacuum for mammals to grow in prominence and diversity.

This piece represents death not in all its pessimistic, permanent power, but as part of a cycle of life, death, and new life. Death provides an opening for new life to grow.

As Ian Malcolm said, "Life finds a way."
