i have trouble with it too sometimes, and it's so frustrating! lol.
alot of the time i use a grid so i can really map out the proportions to get it to look as close to the reference as possible
sometimes i do it without a grid too though, but it's way harder! as you already know lol

Yup, the grid is my trick. I first do an outline of the face, and make sure it looks like the reference picture the most before starting to shade and filling the details. Of course, I don't get it spot on, but with practice, you get better!
And I also like the way you drew this LethargicWhales, it looks lively!
