It's sad to see that. We have two malls that are shutting down around here. And a lot of smaller strip malls. It's happening all over, i guess.

We have large malls all over the place. They cut into each other's ability to make a profit. We had one big strip mall in one town maybe two miles from where my Saturn dealer was in another town. So that town used eminent domain to take away the Saturn dealership from its owner and build an even bigger series of strip malls that took the big boys out of the one two miles away. It's crazy!

Damn, that sounds straight up evil. That's like when TV networks would blur the product placements in the movies they'd show because they were different from their sponsors. I'm glad they knocked that off.

It is straight up evil. Of course, it was a Saturn Dealership, it's closing soon anyway (another brand new vacant building), but it was the idea that the aldermen could say the dealership did not bring in enough tax for the town and so they could just up and replace it with a mall that hurts the next town over. But no more. For some reason, the powers that be in Missouri had a lucid moment long enough to take away eminent domain for that particular cause.
I had no idea television networks did that! That is extremely petty!

Eminent domain is a shaky concept anyway, to use it for that is just scary.
They did it for a while, as near as I can tell the practice has disappeared. I think TV networks figured out that they'd get even more money by showing ads from competing companies. Today in a commercial break you will see competitors bash each other in equal measure.
