I see where you're coming from in regards to the finger nail, it really is the weakest point. To be honest, i wish the hand wasn't even in the picture!

Btw. Did you have to hollow a Bible for this project? (Though this photo is magnificent) - I mean some people may feel hurt or even offended...

There were a people at my school who weren't so keen on the idea - but mainly because the bible's age, rather than religion.
I did feel a little guilty cutting a large hole in hundreds of pages of 200 year old family bible but then again, i bought it from Ebay. As well cutting it, I also restored several parts of it, including the spine.
The reasoning behind using a bible was to represent my own family bible (obviously i wasn't allowed anywhere near mine with penknife!)
I tend to be quite personal with my art projects, and the given title of "Social Idenity" made me want to show how people are lost could relate with their family history, and give them a sense of place - giving them 'The Key' to whatever they want.
Obviously, I didn't have to use a bible, but felt this the best way to represent my idea. I am by no means religious, but understand why others are, so I took the decision to look after this piece (instead of school having it).

Well, your explanation sheds some more light on the matter - now the photo has gained much on meaning..
Well, yep, your decision for using a Bible seems to be kind of *more* justified right now. Still, I wouldn't do it - but that's mainly because I believe myself to be catholic... I'd rather print some pages of excerpts from the Bible and than take a shot
But all in all - the photo is magnificent.
