Yeahhh. I thought of that too. I don't see how they could be alive without actual 'hearts'. I think it refers to them not having hearts in the figurative sense. Like when you say "he hadn't the heart to do something" it's not referring to the actual organ, but to the heart in a non-literal sense.
I dunno. That's just how I see it.
