I know what you mean and this particular movie by him is so realistic that it hits the feels pretty hard, similar to grave of the fireflies. It's a bittersweet thing when a movie leaves that sort of impact on you, on one hand you know it's brilliantly executed but on the other it's so good that it leaves a lasting impression on you.
However I loved how he showed them falling in love, it's so pure and warm.

Yeah, but why do they have to play with my emotions? If you want to tell a love story, that's fine, but do they have to make it end in tragedy? I mean, the world's depressing enough.

well it's not so much a love a story as it is a tribute to part of a real-life story about the war. so it's understandable that it's more mature and real compared to his other films that were more fantastical and light. I kinda think it is suppose to reflect the tragedies of the real world, like how someone has to deal with hardships in life whether it be chasing a dream without giving up or staying strong when grief and worry also make their way into our lives. For example, Jiro never gives up and even when Nahoko is ill, he remains optimistic and loves her unwaveringly. Even at the end, he comes to accept that she has moved on when she tells him to keep on living.
