The first (poorly drawn) picture is done in the style of a Bayeux Tapestry , hearkening back to a time before the understanding of perspective. It mimics the time when I too, didn't understand perspective, and makes for a smooth transition from the previous page when the protagonist passes out.
Bayeux tapestries (as well as cave drawings and drawings you might find on the inside of Egyptian pyramids) are also some of the precursors of sequential art, telling a sequence of actions with a single image, and, in the case of this comic, a single panel.
