This is a work in progress I started quite a long time ago. Not sure if I'll ever get around to finish it. PLEASE DO NOT STEAL. I'm quite nervous about sharing this work and may take it down.

Before God there were the gods that governed the most primordial realm of our ancient ancestors imagination. And before even these gods there were the ancentor spirits, progenitors like those within the stories of the Dreamtime, as so told by the Australian aboriginals, that walked the earth and created it's features. My map attempts to set down the different sacred stories (myths) of our ancestors and combine them into a holistic view. To our most ancient ancestors the passage of the sun through the sky and the underworld was a metaphor for our own lives passing through birth, life, death and rebirth. Therefore I used their thoughts to divide the map into the following groups and, where possible, applied the sacred images of each locations ancient culture to convey each of the groups metaphors.

The Americas - The Setting Sun - Old Age & Death.
The Pacific - The (Starry) Night - After Life & Beyond.
Australia/India/Asia - The Rising Sun - Birth & Re-Birth.
Africa/Middle East/European - The Day - Youth & Life.

Anyhoot my map is a long long way from being completed. I started it in my twenties and now I am in my fifties. It's been a slow progress at glacial speeds as the day-to-day grind of existence gets in the way. Anyway enjoy what there is, a sketch of what may have been, and maybe some day I will continue and finally finish it, just don't hold your breath. lol. All the best and thanks for your views and comments.

OMG I never realized how much Africa looks like a human face until just now! That is really really fitting, because humans originated in Africa. These symbols are so well chosen, and so well made too. Genius to the put the Triquetra over Britain. It represents the past, present and future: and of course Britain sits basically in the midst of it all. Past, present, future/Memory, Activity, Imagination/Death, Life, Faerie/Youth, Adulthood, Age etc etc... You could have put it anywhere in Europe as it's a Celtic symbol: but Britain works best due to being not really attached to any of the rest. Β Β
Pareidolia may be why we have religion (and it almost certainly is), but that doesn't mean it isn't useful to us for loads of other reasons too.Β
This isn't finished? sure looks like it to me, but I'll be very interested to see the finished product then.Β

Thank you for your encouraging words. I'm sorry I am so late to respond. Life issues. Anyway yep my research showed that Britain was special in the Celtic world and so I gave it the prominent place. Choosing the symbols was really hard as (a) I didn't want to offend any one's beliefs and (b) I didn't want to leave out any one's beliefs. But compromises had to be made on (b). The heritage of myths and symbols we have from our ancient ancestors is very rich and also very misunderstood. And alas some has been lost to time making it difficult for me to put the pieces together. Anyway thank you so much. Β

Does "Before God" mean "before God existed", or before monotheism was conceived and became the religion of much of the world?

LBAMagic In reply to UnicronWars [2016-03-03 01:54:10 +0000 UTC]

hi unicornwars. thanks for your question. the map depicts many gods and therefore appears polytheistic and as such "before God" would mean before monotheism. but then you have to consider why many, are they actualy differrent manifistations of the whole and why. during the development of the map i was partly inspired by joseph campbell books "the masks of God" and his books theme on the comparative religion / mythology.

Sounds interesting.
I will have to look into that.

BTW, I'm UnicronWars .
UnicornWars is somebody else.

oops typo sorry. btw there was a video documentary (6 episodes) called the power of myth that focused on joseph campbell's work on comparative religion / mythology. of course this all too human jc has been highly criticized by those who follow the other more than human jc.

Wow, this is a really amazing idea and I can see you've put a lot of work into it. I hope you're still working on it in some capacity 'cause so far it looks really nice.

thank you . i created it long ago when i was in my early twenties when i was full of youthful enthusiasm. it came to me in a sudden flash of inspiration and i completed it in less than a month whilst the light bulb was still shining. but that enthusiasm has been sucked up by my busy work life and the need to pay the bills. i do still play around with it from time to time but don't hold your breath for any updates anytime soon. thanks again for your encouraging words.

thank you for the review. i'm hopeless with colouring. i've use photoshop & gimp just for editing. haven't learn to paint in them yet. anyhoot if you invert the image colour black/white to white/black it looks kind of celestial.

GregSkrtic In reply to LBAMagic [2013-04-22 13:40:12 +0000 UTC]

This looks like something to reproduce as a line drawing, poster-size, and coloring with markers.

Also, I could see this as a mural on a wall.

Any thoughts about what to do with Greenland? The Inuit have a rich cultural history, mythology, and practiced a form of shamanism based on animist principles.

LBAMagic In reply to GregSkrtic [2013-04-23 00:11:24 +0000 UTC]

oops. you noticed the blank areas. lol. honestly after all these years i still really don't have anything yet for greenland. i really have to study the inuit culture and art more. then there was the viking settlers. did they hear the lands spirit and give it a voice too. so many cultures. so much reading. sigh! although the internet now makes it much easier to research this than when i first started. thanks for your feedback. if you have anything else i would love the hear it.
