Be warned! I get dragged alot while critiquing.e.deviantart.com/emoticons/a/a… " width="19" height="19" alt="" title="Sweating a little..." />

I reallly like mermaids and I loved tranquility in this piece. Water looks really calm, her tail is really elegant and I absolutely adored those designs on fin. Overall, it's a nice piece, her expression looks innocent, she's both and charming and innocent. But something looks off...

While I like this piece, I think background needs more dynamic. Perhaps sun peeking behind clouds, some waves or more shine over the sea surface at horizon. Sea doesn't sit still even on a windless day e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" /> Also clouds can be less puffy, which will look more natural. And, maybe that's me but I guess her left pupil looks a bit off? :/ There are minor anatomical mistakes I see, but I'm not confident on anatomy either. Other than the sharp bend on the tail, everything looks smooth. But that... well, tail looks kind of broken there e.deviantart.com/emoticons/a/a… " width="19" height="19" alt="" title="Sweating a little..." />

I guess that's all<< I warned you e.deviantart.com/emoticons/a/a… " width="19" height="19" alt="" title="Sweating a little..." />

I'm pretty aware of the anatomical errors and for some reason, everytime I tried to fix them- they'd get worse, so I left them alone.

I probably should fix up the background a bit, huh? I didn't want to do too much, but I guess there's always a little room for more.

Yes, I guess background needs attention the most ^^ And, those anatomical errors aren't lethal, she's nice and pretty as she is anyway ^^ But you may try using reference photos somtimes for poses, I use my sister or watch myself in mirror for example XD

yeah, I bought an anatomy book and a nice one too- and I'm not using it. But I'll see what I can do with the background.

She is quite beautiful and captivating with her big eyes and I like the orange coloring as opposed to the usual bue/green/teal coloring depicted of mermaids.

thank you, it seemed like a good idea to color differently from her background, to make her stand out

Also, I guess the only big critique I could give to you, since I think your character looks fantastic, is that the rocks shes sitting on lack the same "Solid" coloring that the mermaid has. Im of course speaking about the gradient comparison between the two.

Also I am a little confused on the general shading or where the source of light is located in the picture, I would guess that it is Up to the right (her left), and behind her, at about noon ish time I would think, The counter shadows (the ones on the other side, and other parts of the rock) could use a little more darkening.

Over all though, great work, you still do females better than I could hope to in a long time, and your coloring is superb. Nice work.

yeah, but I try to seperate the setting from the character. If you watch a lot of animated movies, the characters and active objects are colored more brightly and solid, where the rest of the background is painted in. In future artwork, I could make the background more solid like the character and see how that looks.

Heh... yeah, that's a major flaw of mine, I tend to ignore the light source. I know I really should be mindful of it. But lets just say that its noon time.

Thank you

You know, I was going to complain about the size of her eyes, but then biologically I realized that sea creatures have generally larger eyes than there land born counterparts.

nice work Sonya.

that and I like to draw my characters with large eyes. But yeah, her eyes are a lot larger than most of my other characters. Its interesting, she was originally drawn in anime style and I hated the way the eyes looked, so when I inked in Flash, I made the eyes more western, but I kinda had to keep them large because the rest of her was drawn for the anime size eyes.

I really like the little details, like the pearl strands on her fin and the bright color palette with blue and orange really makes the mermaid stand out.
