thanks mate

My hair is painted on a separate layer to the head. This allows me to get the head structure correct and makes for easy edits on the overall hair shape.

I block in the entire hair design in flat value to check it is working, then go in a draw the main hair sections...those that are casting drop shadows onto the hair/head beneath. I quickly try to define the form (volume) with value. Then drop in different colors with a color layer. Start painting in the strands with a hair brush and then add in some color highlights with an overlay layer and subtle shadows with a multiply layer. keep repeating that until 99% done. Last steps are to add some stray hairs with a 1px round brush and break up the edges with a 1-3px smudge brush (set to 95%+)

Hope that helps I can go into it in more detail if needed.

That all being said, I still struggle with hair. Can take up a lot of time... my aim to find something that works as quickly as possible.
