Description There is some blood here, though nothing really gruesome is going on.

Inspired by January Events, Lithuania (Sausio ivykiai) and the song Liberty (Laisve).

11 - 13 Jan 1991, Lithuanian civilians bravely defended their country against the Soviet military's attempt for reoccupation. 14 civilians were killed. In return for their sacrifice, the Vilnius TV tower, the main site of the incident, along with the nation itself, stands strong till this day.

I'm from Lithuania. My dad was next to the TV Tower that night, he saw everything. Tanks, military, people. And today, it's 20 years after that event. Thank you for drawing this < 3 I really love it .

Thank you for the comment, and sorry for the late reply. I wish I had given you feedback on the date to give your country a word of congratulations!

Your dad must have witnessed some great events for the nation's history. Things like that are not likely to be forgotten, never and ever!

The truth is a bit different, but lithuanians really showed bravery that night.

It's... so nice to hear that people are interested in Lithuanian history and know some of it. This event is the most interesting for me. And that song... it's one of the most beautiful songs they sang during the "Ssusio įvykiai".

wonderful piece. I love the white bg, and the word "Laisvė". And the red blood on the snow looks so bright and shocking! Besides, the figure and the way he is standing with no fear after having such tough past makes the piece so powerful! I love it

Thank you for your comment! History in general is interesting. It's a shame that many miss the more detailed part

As for the song, it really is poetry in music (or I would think). The language itself sounds very pleasant, too. Strive on, Lithuania!

Beautiful, simply beautiful. *O*

It's nice to learn history of other countries. Lithuania always seemed like a meek country to me, though. (non-hetalia wise)

lansx In reply to NekoNeko-chi [2010-03-24 10:17:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

He does seem like a meek guy, doesn't he? But he's had a pretty tough life (((
I imagine him to be a person who often wakes up in early hours because his painful old wounds are acting up again.

NekoNeko-chi In reply to lansx [2010-03-26 13:44:53 +0000 UTC]

Welcome~

What nation hasn't had a tough history? I have a feeling that a lot of the nations are like that...

lansx In reply to NekoNeko-chi [2010-03-27 03:14:07 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I feel that there's a difference for the central European countries.
There's a strange sense struggle for them - being in Europe, surrounded by Russia on the east, and economically strong countries like Germany on the west, the pressure must be very strong. And with the feeling of very recent (and not so pleasant) historical events still pretty fresh in people's memories, a whole new brand of melancholy is born altogether.
I am not saying that they're worse or better off than any other country in the world, I just feel that the "toughness" they have to face is still quite raw and different, almost slightly awkward.

But again, I am being very opinionated. Pls don't mind it xD

Thanks for the comments once again

Loovely~ every snippet of history I hear about Lithuania seems to show them as brave & honorable & so tough too~~ and he's such an awesome, nice character too.
He looks totally awesome in that coat. I had no idea the Soviets were occupying people in 1991... weren't they dissolved that year? D: D: D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lansx In reply to Trillzey [2010-03-06 08:12:37 +0000 UTC]

And I think they're a little bitter, too, like their national flora the rue. Not that it's a negative thing, but it's just what I feel =]
Lithuania declared independence in March 1990. The Soviet tried to retake it in January 1991 but failed.
The dissolution of the USSR happened in December the same year. Hope that clears things up : D

Thanks for the comments! It's nice to see another Australian user!

Ohooo~ now it makes sense! I thought Lithuania hadn't been part of the Soviet Union for some reason. I never knew much about Lithuania before Hetalia.... and now I know a little more. Yaayy Aussie~ I remember 5 years ago I went to an anime con and there seemed so little talent out there... and now I keep meeting all these exciting artists on DA & IRL who are local, AND rock at the same time.

lansx In reply to Trillzey [2010-03-06 08:50:26 +0000 UTC]

Ahahaha eastern and central European countries are often ignored by a lot of people, so I don't blame them if they feel bemused or even grumpy about it xD
(LOL I don't know about you guys, but we had nearly 2.5 years of pure high-school Australian history and geography. Stuff other than Australia, the main Allies and the main Axis were almost untouched. Geographical knowledge was even more appalling. Oh my...)
Yeah, oriental culture has only touched Aus in the recent years or so. I haven't interacted with any local anime-artists too personally, but hope I will

Trillzey In reply to lansx [2010-03-06 08:57:58 +0000 UTC]

That's exactly it! History was WW1 and Gallipoli, WW2 and the Allies' perspective, and a bit about Aboriginal cultures in primary school. I don't think we ever even looked at a globe...

Yeah~~ I don't know many in person at all, just a classmate or two that I found out are uber-cool illustrators on the sly.... but there's people out there! It's exciting whereabouts are you based?

*nods in agreement* Some people had no idea where the Amazon River flow. And some didn't know about Lake Eyre (Oz would be so sad). It's a pity because the world is so amazing.
My situation is similar to yours Technical skills are never too huge a focus here, not from my perspective anyway.
Sydney I am in. WBU?

Yeah I only did a tiiiny bit of history at school and geography for us was all general cartography / geology type stuff, so we didn't get much in terms of world maps.
I'm in Melbourne.... I think you guys have a much bigger scene in terms of cons / artists etc etc, but even here you can find some awesomeness.

Sounds wierd, but I think the best part is the completely white background. It makes it more serious and shocking.

Ah, I was just reading about that event. It made me respect this country even more. I bow to their bravery.

His seemingly cold and emotionless face sent shivers down my spine. Great job.

Yes, I agree with you - bravery of a nation should always be respected and valued.

...and many Lithuanian song lyrics seem to possess a melancholy characteristic that is rather sad and lovely

I pondered out the title from the song's lyrics: "And you (Lithuania) tell me: stand as liberty's standing!"
