Description
Finished this thing ! I, uh, kinda pulled an all-nighter for this and did it by working for 14 hours straight (I turned it into a class assignment, hahahah xD), so things might be a lil funky, and I'm not overly-satisfied with the heavy black lineart paired with the coloring, but I'm gonna post this now 'cuz I don't know if I'll ever work on it again... u_u;
But yeah, here we go! Been a looong long time since I did a full-out digital anything, so pretty pleased with this! The perspective on the crane took me way too long to figure out (I actually had to build myself a model from bamboo skewers sob) but, well-! I'm still not satisfied with the look of the city; the scale's off so it's not as far away as I'd like, but, I'll work on that... in general, learning how to draw on a greater scale is a challenge I want to tackle this year.
Still, hope you guys like-! This is still a pretty big achievement for me, illustrating something like this that even approaches what I had in mind, and I'm glad I pushed myself to do this.
Characters are Ian and Cris from my story Angel Dust . This is an illustration to go with a piece I wrote, here:
AD - RiseIt's in the oncoming dusk that the angels begin to show.
Ian watches them, the trails they carve through the sky, slick as quicksilver, erratic as skipping stones with ripples more felt than seen. Nothing but light and that static song, beautiful even as casual calamities, slashing through the sky in every direction. If only they weren't so bright.
A thousand shooting stars, but all anyone wishes is that they'll never be struck by one.
Ian closes his eyes, lets the afterimage map itself onto the backs of his eyelids, searches the lines for some kind of pattern or route, but he's never had a sense of direction, only the vaguest inkling of up, not North.
He rubs the battery acid on his hands, feels the skin of his fingertips peel and roll into slivers. He feels grit and rust crumbled inbetween, from an afternoon of digging through another scrap heap. He dusts his hands off on his jeans and shifts the backpack strap on his shoulder.
More Angel Dust:
AD - SlideThe living room and the kitchen all have too many sharp corners, so they go to the bedroom. Cris kicks off his shoes, his socks, shrugs off his jacket and drapes it over the doorknob. He takes the piercing out of his lip and sets it on the windowsill, stands with his legs planted apart and shoves his hands in his pockets.
"C'mon then."
Ian stares back.
Cris nods at him.
"Take the first shot."
Ian shuffles from one foot to the other, head dropped low. His hands open and close.
"C'mon you fucking pussy, at least pretend you've still got some fucking balls left you worthless"--
Ian steps forward, fists raised, and Cris laughs, shaking his head.
"Well? What're you waiting f"--
The punch catches him squarely in the jaw, snaps his head to the side though his feet stay anchored to the floor. Cris winces, blinks, gives his head a violent shake. He laughs, a hooting, hyena sound.
"Fuck, Junk."
He grins.
"That almost hurt."

Augh, the MARKS you made shading Ian. I could just eat that lighting and those marks right up. Your use of color, especially on his hair, is fantaaaaaaaastic. and the line weightttt.

Building a model out of skewers is so hardcore. ANYTHING FOR YOUR ART.
I think besides messing with the mechanical perspective (which I can't offer any advice on because i still don't know how the hell it works hnnngh), you could push the atmospheric a little more to help with the scale, especially with regards to color and saturation 'fading' more into the distance.
Seriously though this is fantastic. The way you've been pushing yourself this year is incredible to see! I looove the point of view here--it's like I'm standing right next to Ian.

Hahahahah, not so much hardcore, more I'm too dumb to figure it out mentally and had to resort to a goddamn physical model 'cuz I don't know how to do 3D yet either... b-b-but thank you! ; - ;
The scale still isn't where I'd like to be, but thanks for the atmosphere tip! I still really need to work on expressing the right depth, arghh, that's one more thing I really want to get better at soon~ ;-;
Thank youuuuu~! <3

Holy shiiiiIIIIIIIt, this looks awesome - it definitely captures the mood of Angel Dust (and the motif of height and flight that you present a lot).
Lots of gorgeous teeny-tiny details, too (the rendering on Ian's hand, hhhhh). I hope you're super proud, this is one hell of a painting.

Hahahahahah, thank you so much, I'm glad you like! (And, well, they're not actually shooting stars, but angels... xD)
But thanks! My patience is just too poor though, ughh, I feel bad... if I worked more on it what would you like to see? I'm not satisfied with how the city came out (too large, too close) and I'd like to paint over my black lines, but otherwise...? o:

Ahh, okay xDD
Pfff Angels, Shooting Stars, I can't see any difference xD
But good to know ^0^
Can't imagine that xD
As you said, I'd work on the lines a bit that's what I thought of most owo
I can't see too much wrong with the City but you could move the whole thing just a bit more down so there is a bit of free space between the city horizon and the tip of the... eh thing I don't know the English name xD That would also help already I think and it is worth a try ^.~
It only works if the city is on a different layer though of course^^

Aaaahhhhhh yeah, I see what you mean, but the perspective/layers are hard to work with indeed.... my problem is I never have the patience to go back to a piece... but in general someday I'd like to re-work the whole city, it's not on the scale that I wanted, things look too close... u_u
But thank you so much, dearie-!! <3
