Description Final project from my Intro to 2D Animation class last semester--yeah, way back in May. Took me that long just to build up the courage/get enough distance from my own embarrassment to put this up here. In a way I'm still kind of proud of it: just seeing what I managed to do in, oh, 6 weeks or so? in a class I "took" just because I wanted to learn animation... but obviously, I bit off way more than I could chew, and realized just how far I still am from becoming anything close to an animator.

Please don't critique this for the animation or concept or composition; I know it's poor, rushed, cheesy and disconcerting. Most of it makes me wince. I know I really, really need to practice depth.
But, well... I guess, I just really wanted to show you this roughest version of the animation I WANTED to make. I did this for my final project because this is what I dreamed of every time I listened to this song. This is Ian's song, and Ian's beginning. I'm not even sure if I want to keep this idea--it's cheesy as hell, I know, but for now it's what I'm running with until I can come up with something better. The concept's gonna stay the same either way, because this has always been a story of the fall. For those of you who've been following Angel Dust (bless you guys, seriously), maybe this'll help illuminate something? I hope it adds a little to the story.

The song is "One Day You Will Teach Me To Let Go Of My Fears," by sleepmakeswaves , used with their permission in this animation. You can listen to the unedited version here , and even download it if you like! Thanks again to this band for letting me use their music; it's the whole reason this animation even exists.

For anyone who spotted the cameos, they are: ~shark-bomb 's Tudor, =theblackbutterfly 's Obizuth, and of course a Cris from AD . And yes, I did look up Treasure Planet's intro scene a million times, but no, this was not actually inspired by it. This is the beginning to my own story, Angel Dust: [link]

Put together with Photoshop CS5 and Toon Boom Animate Pro. Also available on Vimeo, here

Thank you everyone for the support, you guys are the best!!! β™₯

Pahahah, ohgosh thank you so much!!! Β This looser, kinda sketchy way of animating felt great, I really gotta pick myself up and get myself to do more of this stuff, hah!

It's a lot of work, but the way you put it together really paid off. Ach that scene where all the buildings were moving along with the characters...I bet that took forever, but it looks wonderful!

Pahahahah yeah, I really had to plan this out in advance 'cuz I knew I was being really ambitious... xD Β

So glad all of my hard work paid off! Β

Pahahahah, I only finished it 'cuz of motivation (and copious quantities of help from the professor) that helped me finish this animation! Β

I've started the storyboard/plotting of a second animation, but I haven't found the motivation to animate it yet, I need another class it seems... xD

Sorry for the crazy late reply on this amazing animation but i'd just like to let you know that it was really well done for something that you, metaphorically, pulled out of your ass! I especially enjoyed the close up scenes of their faces while they're falling. Well done, and thank you for the inspiration!

You're welcome. I've decided to start doing some skateboarders/airboarders posing just for practice because of this! Sometimes i wonder why i'm taking engineering instead of art... Haha, probably because it's hard to make money as an artist unless you're amazing.

Laitma In reply to DiableHaven [2013-06-24 00:21:34 +0000 UTC]

Aaaaaaahhhhhhhahahahah, you're speaking to someone who got a BS in Engineering... and is now running off to get a BFA in Art... soooo I, uh, don't wanna set any bad examples here...Β

But yeah, I'm glad that it's helped! Β Eureka 7 is an anime with good examples of airboarding/hoverboarding too, if you need refs~ C:

DiableHaven In reply to Laitma [2013-06-24 01:33:50 +0000 UTC]

YAaaaayz!! Someone i can sympathize with. haha! I'm going to see how this engineering thing plays out and maybe do the same thing that you're doing if it doesn't.

I knew there was an anime that had airboarding/hoverboarding in it, i just couldn't remember which one it was. I really enjoyed Eureka 7, especially their high quality animating skills!

Yeeeeah, it's good to go in keeping your options open, I went in with a dog-headed determination to get me a degree that just turned out to be a waste of time and money... u_u Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DiableHaven In reply to Laitma [2013-06-25 06:44:04 +0000 UTC]

It certainly does suck up money. I'm hoping it won't be too much of a waste of time though haha. I do love math

Laitma In reply to DiableHaven [2013-06-25 13:44:32 +0000 UTC]

Ahhhhhh, that's good, then-! Β I thought I liked math in high school, but college math courses really made me realize I hate math xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DiableHaven In reply to Laitma [2013-06-25 21:03:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, college math is ridiculous and stupid, but for some reason i can't help but enjoy them... Although i did enjoy my coding class the most, partially because i never went to a single lecture and still managed to pass the class

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Laitma In reply to DiableHaven [2013-06-26 15:34:36 +0000 UTC]

Hahahahah, that's amazing, though~! Β I managed it but it was tough as hell and the math never came intuitively to me (well, not once you got into the proofs and abstract stuff. Β I kind of sucked at it once you moved beyond basic calculus xD)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DiableHaven In reply to Laitma [2013-06-26 16:49:50 +0000 UTC]

The math was weird and obscure. I hated anything to do with proofs, it just seems so... Useless to me!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Laitma In reply to DiableHaven [2013-06-26 17:47:56 +0000 UTC]

Pahahahah, yeaaaaaaaaah those got to me... I guess they're meant for the real math majors who'd do research/proofs & theories for a career, to help develop that style of thinking... but it was definitely not for me. Β xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DiableHaven In reply to Laitma [2013-06-26 20:58:36 +0000 UTC]

But engineers aren't math majors Xp... Well they need to know math, but not that kind of stuff. I'm more looking forward to the design side of engineering.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Laitma In reply to DiableHaven [2013-06-27 13:21:54 +0000 UTC]

Hahahah, yeah, true. Β The design side should be a lot more fun~! Β

Are you going into mechanical engineering, then? Β o:

DiableHaven In reply to Laitma [2013-06-27 15:39:09 +0000 UTC]

That's what i'm hoping for, although i don't know what specialization i'm getting into yet. First year engineers don't find out what they're in second year till about mid-end of july...

HOLY CRAP LAITMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was ka-reh-zey!! D: As for a course you just 'took' to learn animation, your project was sooooo goooooood . I can't see how you can say that it was poor, cheesy, or disconcerting. Rushed though, probably xD. But you did a fine job at it lady!! D: UGH. UGH... UGHHHHHHHHhhhhhhh.....

The music was so fitting too... and that feather, knitted everything together so nicely- from beginning to end xD. If you do have the time to clean up it up, I WANT TO WATCH IIIIIIIIIIIT D:::::::::::.

I know that even though it's a short 3 minute video, it took you months to complete D:. But, MAN, if you could do like, little mini-series of this, how friggin' awesome would that be HUH??

You make me want to learn animation too ;A;. Is that program easier than Flash? Because I tried learning Flash and that just... took too long for me xD *shot.

Keep doing what you're doing!! OHMANTHATWASSOGOOD!!!D::::

U-U-UWAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
homg Aki
Aki why you so nice to meeeeeeeeeeeeee ;A; ;A; ;A;
And, and, I do promise, someday I'll re-do/finish this animation up, I will! I really do wanna be able to complete this piece, ahh~

And, mmmm, yes, I found that Toon Boom was a lot easier than Flash! ...Flash drives me positively nuts, too... that and it kept crashing on my computer. 8D (But then again I just hate Adobe interfaces hahahaha.)

But seriously, GWAH! Thank you SO MUCH for your super-kind comment!! I'll keep it with me and have it warm my heart these cold February days. ;-;
