Description This amaryllis at the McMillan Greenhouse [link] actually looked a little more like some type of lily, than an amaryllis... but, I thought it was awfully pretty!

Beautiful Alice I do not have that Bright Pink one..
And what a great link I felt like I was at home

Ahhh they are my kind of plants, down under here we call them Hippies short for Hippeastrum I have a few different colours probably about ten could be more No Maintenance no watering unless its dry when they are flowering no Insect eats them, they are very easy to grow from seed, so if you want 100 Hippies to line both sides of your driveway you could easy grow that many from one or two seed pods, it only takes three years for them to flower from seeds and worth the wait if you want many..

*begging and looking really cute* send seeds???

Actually, we have already managed to cultivate (is that the right word? ) several new amaryllis by separating the bulblets that form around the mother bulb... but, our first and only seed pod [link] didn't do that well for although some of the seeds did sprout and come up, they did not develop much past putting up one green thin leaf. Of course, Mary-Anne you have to realize that all of mine & Bob's amaryllis have to live their lives in pots, that we drag in and out for we are about one planting zone too far north, for them to be planted in the ground.

Do you have one like this one? [link] Isn't it a beauty?? the image says it's a native of Brazil

I wonder what happened to my reply from last night humm it was a long one too..

I would love to be able to send you some seeds Alice but due to Customs and the wrong time of the year mine go to seed around Christmas time and some seeds have to be planted fresh it would not work out.. You can always move closer to here.

That's what my seeds look like too on your link..

I think those babies are call offsets Alice though I prefer bulblets well I sure can understand that word much better, good on you for separating them, you can even share if you want too, my friends and neighbours have freebies from my ones..

Some of mine bulbs live in pots too Alice because if I left them in the garden beds they would rot with all the rain we have been having the past two wet seasons..

No I don't have that one Alice but I have seen it for sale in the shops and yes it is a beauty..

*scratches head and thinks a bit* ...you might have to fight that one out with Lynne =Lynne66124 but then again, I don't know precisely how old you are Does it really matter? My age is dependent upon how I feel today and somedays I'm really old and other days I'm just a little kid But, I do know that the 6 of us have all been around the block a few times, and it would be such a hoot to have us all in the same place at the same time

*now scratches head even harder* just tried to show you something with code that used to work in comments, and now it doesn't... bizarre!

I did get on Lynne's site yesterday and looked at her ID I don't know about that Alice, I think Lynne looks younger than me and I have watery eyes so probably cannot see too good that was when I read that Joke Well Alice most days I feel like a but as the day wears on I get a bit of a spring in my step sometimes

I guess now that the mornings are a little cooler though high humidity best I go around the block and maybe try and get a little fitter like a kid *At *

well, if you figure out how to actually get fitter... please share!

We ate a pizza for dinner tonight, with another fresh avocado, and some applesauce... and one or all of them are trying to make me a very old right now Maybe it was the combination of all 3 items but, dang it! they were oh so

I don't think either one of you would look a day over 100 of course, I can only say that because I feel like I'm 99 right at the moment But, you know what? I've decided that I really like wrinkles they give a person "character" and show that you've actually been somewhere, and done something! When I see these faces of young models... they always look kinda blank... and I think to myself... bet, they don't know

I had Beef Curry and rice for Dinner

This is your last laugh for my day..

I think we are supposed to keep moving all day and doing push ups

Speaking of moving all day, I bought a Pedometer on the weekend and yesterday morning after clipping it to the waistband of my shorts and cleaning the house I managed to clock up 5569 steps, walk 2 lousy kms, burn off 217.9 calories and 28.3 fat *I have still to work out if that is grams, ounces or I wish kgs * !!! and at the slow speed I was walking I would only do 1.2 kph.. Well do you know anyone that hurries when cleaning the house after all how jolly fast can you go when on your hands and knees washing the toilet floor or cleaning the bath and that is not counted in the steps as the leg part of your body is stationary even if your poor arms are going hell for leather..

I think I will stick to mowing our grass as last year we got a cheap freebie Pedometer with the Sunday Paper and I remember I walked many more Kms and took thousands more steps in half the time I spent cleaning the jolly house I would rather mow the grass on our 3/4 acre block any day than do housework after all I am a gardener/cook/secretary/nurse/accountant/painter/jack of all trades and master of none, not a jolly cleaning lady.. Just as well I have Tony as he cleaned the oven out for me today *My excuse is I am the cook not the cleaning lady* while I pulled my sewing machine apart trying to find out what is wrong with it the verdict the cleaning lady said when I showed him was its out of alignment so on Thursday its off to get repaired by a Professional what a shame they even make things these days I cannot fix anymore.

And one guess who is not borrowing my sewing machine again

Not that I think R did it as I know it would have been Adam he is a bit like his favourite a stickybeak who wants to know how things work, now I know why my Dad used to say to me *You should have been a Boy* I must have been a terror when I was young then

No I dont think we look a day over 100 either
I love wrinkles too we get on well together..

Ya mean those bags of bones, blank is right

Let's see... I never could see the use of a pedometer, or a set of scales for weighing yourself both drive me Although I DO need to walk more but, I've worn the same size jeans for years... when they starting getting snug, I lay off the chocolate!!

wait a minute... I thought you HATED sewing... so why are you worried about whether or not your sewing machine is in alignment???

and Bob absolutely s your "stickybeak" He was asking me to translate that this morning

Firey-Sunset In reply to LadyAliceofOz [2010-03-25 07:23:16 +0000 UTC]

I do hate sewing, I hate a lot of chores but I still have to do them ..

Tony has two pairs of new jeans in the wardrobe, they have been there two years could be three years now waiting for me to chop six inches off the legs and put a hem up, but the Winters have been warm so he has been wearing his good but old ones when we go out, but he wants these done for when we pack that luggage to go to Wales. I told you I hated sewing..

Got a quote today for a Service $125 no mention about parts if they are broken I am thinking about that one as for a few more $$$ I can buy a brand new one.

I don't know what was worse today, that or the $211 we handed over to get Tony's Watch serviced as the jolly calendar don't turn too well but its about 15 years old now and a good brand and he loves it, turn around is around six weeks but they give you a loan watch for free.. That's still cheaper than replacing that watch which today's ones would probably not be as good as his old one and it comes back with a 12 months Warranty

Stickybeak is an Australian slang term for an inquisitive person, but it is used affectionately when referring to children. A rough translation would be a Curious.

That's me I want to know how everything works..

I am not that other kind of stickybeak like a Gossip who sticks their noses into people business. I have enough problems minding my own to be bothered by anyone else's.

LadyAliceofOz In reply to Firey-Sunset [2010-03-25 07:54:21 +0000 UTC]

yep! Bob's got a couple of pairs of slacks like that

and before you spend the $125... consider this, Bob & I did spend $79 to have my old Singer put in time... after having spent other money a few years ago to buy the new gears for the bobbin, after they broke... and dang it! When I got it back in January, I wanted to for it was an old, out-of-date, no longer up to today's technology machine. I was trying to make it a go... but, Bob's not stupid... and he starts searching on the web, and found my new $499 Brother CS6000i on sale for $166.95 at Amazon.com It will sew without a foot pedal (great for old ladies with funny nerves in their feet)... and sews like a dream! But, after he had described all that it would do, and asks me do I want one... I wanted to cry for having let him try to fix the old one and wasting good money after bad... so, I smiled and told him I'd be lying if I said I didn't

Oh, I'd already figured stickybeak out to a tee... and I love it! and no, I know you're not a gossip, or we wouldn't be friends Yeah, I've always had enough of my own to worry about, too! and even though I have a neighbor who is a terrible gossip I've always asked Bob what this woman finds so interesting about him and me, anyway?? Fortunately, she doesn't most of the time and for that I am thankful!

P.S. Tell Tony that I gave up wearing a watch years ago... and if I really want to know what time it is... I look at the clock on the stove, the one on my cell phone, or in the bottom right hand corner of the computer screen and speaking of that... my expiration button for today has just popped out! and I'm going to bed

Target had the Brother XL-2230 for half price this week for $164 but of course they were sold out when we went there yesterday I was not upset as when I came home I looked up some reviews and was not impressed.. I may cut them down and get Tony to stitch them up, he is a much better hand sewer than me anyway, being a Merchant Seaman he had to be.. He is a whizz at putting new zips in by hand I cannot even put them in on my machine

The lady at the back of us is one of those Gossip types, it just goes in one ear and out the other with me but if I see her coming I am off..

I have not worn a watch for over 30 years Alice I hate them anyway I have a good idea of the time just by looking at where the sun is and what noises my tummy are making.. Tony cannot live without one strange isn't it, he was a creature of habit and I will leave it at that.

poor Tony! But zippers by hand?? Now that is amazing!

yes, it's amazing how fast Bob & I can disappear though sometimes when we are working in the backyard, we just keep changing the subject on her, until she gets so baffled by our happy babbling and total lack of munchable information... that she soon tires of it, and makes an excuse to go home!

Bob & I both laughed at your description of not needing a watch... for that's us to a tee! We HAD to wear a watch, when we worked in the corporate world and it's one of the first things we pitched, when we started working for ourselves The only time that my "inner" clock gets confused sometimes... is when we are traveling, and end up on the very eastern side of our own time zone... the sun sets earlier there... even though the time is the same... and it's a bit disconcerting. The only other time we've been really baffled, was one time when Bob went bear hunting in Canada, and Lindsay & I stayed in Ely, Minnesota for the (which we are used to being directly overhead... from east to west) was suddenly way too far to the south... we were sure glad to get back home from that trip

Would you believe Tony has just finished sewing in another zip for himself Thank Goodness. None of my clothes have zips they are all elastic waistbands

I find if you start talking about your problems to someone like that they are off in a

Its a good way to tell the time I am not one for watches or clocks I have enough to worry about without worrying about the jolly time..

Yes your inner clock does get confused that's another reason I hate International Travelling I seem to have jet lag for a week either way. Going through 10 times zones it is a bitg much some times..

As far as learning on dA..., that's another matter which I will reserve my thoughts about at this time(be sure to wear kneepads and elbow pads when sparring with others on dA). Oneday I might tell you what is really bothering me about dA, and it has nothing to do with dA personnel that I know of).

You know James I can't for the life of me figure out where you got Texas from this deviation that was made at the UNC Charlotte's McMillan Greenhouse North Carolina is a long way from Texas

Sparring on DA is just like sparring in real life James if that's how you want to spend your time, there are always idiots willing to spar with you, and trade insults and stewipity all day long Those folks find themselves blocked from my page 'cos I don't have time for it!!

And so far as my comment about learning something on I learn something new almost every time I come on here.... sooooooo, what all this rambling is all about... is to say that maybe you need to find new friends on DA, adopt a new approach to your dealings with others on DA, and look around for what you CAN learn James for just like real life.... you get out of it, what you decide to put into it

Thanks..., I know I didn't explain what the problem was correctly...Perhaps maybe someday someone will care to explain how my messages went all around the world AND ended up in others dA sites(other from which was intended..., AND I get messages from other dA artists who never even sent them, making it very difficult for me to discern the "real, from the disguised..." I can't begin to tell you how many times either my messages or other messages have either been hijacked or rerouted(to that add "Hacked"). I don't need any new friends(although I will always welcome them), but it's more like I don't need any enemies who feel they have the right to access my dA site and cause trouble for me just because they can't organize their own personal dA pages and their own lives.
Alice, I made a mistake last October, one stupid mistake when I was new on dA and told a writer that I had read their short story of a slow involvement dialog and scenario of the teenage boy befriending a younger boy in a park, which the end result was that of an action that is illegal in the U.S.(sodomy). When I brought it to the writers attention, and stated that she should have put a strict mature audience window on the poem, I had spammed mail and all sorts of nasties thrown at me from friends of the writer, so on and so forth which I think still comes through my dA site from time to time...I wasn't wrong, dA has strict guidelines what constitutes unacceptable material and how it is to be presented on this dA website etc. Ok, I offended a writer of that story, had it had a mature audience window on it, I wouldn't even be writing you about it at this time..., and I would have rather NOT have read that filthy story...I mean, it didn't even become apparent what was really going on till the last third of the story, by then I was really offended. Ok, I answered everybody who messaged me since then, but somehow it really hurt me...I'm so mad at dA for not having a tighter hold of the reins when their guidelines and principles are being violated all the time...I mean, what is the use of drawing up strict guidelines that all artists must follow, but not enforcing them?
Ok, I respect that you have a very practical outlook on matters in sharing with me, I just can't begin to tell you how this type of behavior from dA artists poses a serious detriment for others who are really seriously trying to work on bettering their own personal dA sites.
Lastly, I merely associated the Amarrylis as a "Texan flower" because of the town in Texas named after it(and yellow is the color associated with the texas State (rose) flower, is all(I didn't read the noes you wrote about it till after I wrote my comment. Think nothing of it!!! Anyway, I hope to bring about some good changes through my photography on dA...This rather lengthy note is not at all directed at you, I merely didn't know what to do or who to talk to about being bombarded from dA folks whom I really don't even know nor care to know due to their immaturity...So, take care in nuturing your artist growth on dA's website and I will always try to do the same...Xd/Airlux

now your other comments make some sense James I agree with you regarding DA's guidelines, etc.... but, again, just like real life criminals go free all the time, drug dealers aren't made to pay for the lives they ruin, and so on......... BUT, when it comes to DA, you can BLOCK anyone from your page who attacks you, and you can file a "violation report" on ANY deviation that you think is in violation of guidelines at any time I do it all the time... when I come across ripped images that have been put up by scribble artists. If you aren't aware of how to block someone from your page, or how to file a violation report, just send me a and I'll be happy to direct to the instructions for both of those items

Just like in real life, James it's not wise to accost the inhabitants of a crack house face to face, without the police... and the same is true with violation reports on ... that's why they are totally anonymous If DA deems that the violation is serious enough, the deviant can be banned and they very often are! Recently, a scribble artist came on DA and put up images taken by Clark Little [link] and even had the unmitigated gall to even indicate in both his artist's comments and the responses to other deviants that he had "busted his tail" to get these shots After numerous violation reports were filed, when his ripped shots made it to the popular screen, and came to the notice of long time deviants... DA banned his butt within 24 hours, and took down all his ripped art

It is really best, just as it is NOT a good thing to say anything at all to the inhabitants of a crack house, before you call the police... may I suggest in the future, that instead of attempting to tell a jerkwad writer that their story is horrible and offensive... that you file a violation report, instead

I really hope this helps!

airlux27 In reply to LadyAliceofOz [2010-03-17 19:56:57 +0000 UTC]

YOU have helped..., thank you for stated velocities!!!
James' note: I did file a violation report..., I think it may have been that I was 2 weeks new(I had no Deviations prepared for submission back then), but I did message the proper department and they ignored me...
I realize now that I also could have passed over the story, but I didn't realize that then, and I paid the price for it...You know Alice, I am really not a prudish person(I made it through the sixties and seventies), but I am a sensitive person and prefer being given the option to choose what material that I will read, and that goes for what artwork I choose to view also...(I believe that others should also have that same option also)...
You can't imagine how much I had to respond to from just that one comment about an issue that I would rather have been spared of. I don't need to read about something to know that it goes on in society). Since then, security ignored me(they pride themselves in responding within 72 hours), yet they did not!!! It then became apparent to me from viewing deviations that some artists were allowed to show material that others were reprimanded for. This kind of "playing favorites" among dA can only net a terrible loss among all the artists, resulting in hurt feelings, loss of dA participation, and loss of revenues(most people are motivated to spend more when they are satisfied within a system that adopts a "What's good for the goose, is good for the gander policy). Since then, i personally limit my literature reading to a very, very limited few(mostly what comes through on my d'watch screen).
Never again will I get involved in somebody's pathetic attempt to force me to read their tragic epic. Ok, on on a lighter sense...
You demonstrate great creativity in my messages, I suppose one day I will get more creative in that way, although I simply want to limit my creativity right now to my portfolio of prints...(I can't even decide what photo best demonstrates mt character for my Avatar so I choose to leave it "plain dA" for now). And, I have never blocked anybody from my d'pages for anything. I let everybody through because ultimately in the way of the Zen mind, the bigger, more destructive force will find their own negative Karma returning back to them, in short, if someone chooses to cause a negative influence of any sort..., it will rebound to them, not me!!! Although I am mindful of your suggestion to block another, it simply is not my philosophy(but I will meditate upon your suggestion for purposes of good growth on this dA art site)...
Ok, enough then, I am convinced that you mean well in your responses, and that will be all for now, thank you!!! TTFN, Airlux

LadyAliceofOz In reply to airlux27 [2010-03-18 04:27:40 +0000 UTC]

what does TTFN mean?

James, I totally understand what you're saying and yes, I do agree that there are lots of problems with DA... but, there are lots of problems with the city that I live in... but, I don't move away I do see certain deviants get away with a lot, and DD's are not always handed out for outstanding art and certain pet people seem to get more than their share of them

Buuuuuttt, my time is my relax time away from what I do for a living... and I have enjoyed the friendships that I have made here, with folks that I would never have been able to meet otherwise. I enjoy my photography, and my sewing, and flowers... but, I'm not here to sell prints, make any money, or launch a career so my interests in may be totally different from yours.. and that's okay, too! If someone enjoys my photography, then it's a bonus... but, I don't want critiques, and I avoid the drama in this place like I avoid the plague! Again, I'm here to not get uptight

Thanks for realizing that I do mean well and just so you know, I use the cute little emotes rather liberally for two reasons... Alzheimer's runs in the maternal side of my family and anything that causes you to remember, and use your hands and eyes at the same time is good for preventing Alzheimer's... so the ones I use are the ones I can remember... so it's a memory game for me ... and secondly, I have a lot of international friends, who are thinking and translating in their birth language, and the emotes help to give the true intention of my words, and that's a bonus!!

airlux27 In reply to LadyAliceofOz [2010-03-18 16:49:59 +0000 UTC]

OK thankx for recent responses..., I would imagine that with dA right now it's quantity, more than quality that enables them to expand to meet the awesome demand of their site...I see the other side of the coin however. To me, quality will always be more important wether it's friendships, business, all forms of artwork, etc. You know, I truly believe that when dA lowers it's standards and allows a lot of troublemakers and riff-raff in who repeatedly show no regards to the laws and guidelines set by the original charter laws, or who clearly show little or no respect for other dA's..., that's when other dA artists and the awesome amount of non-dA's that peruse the dA pages see that and although THEY may not complain much or not at all, yet it will always be reflected in total sales flowing in dA. In other words, junk in..., equals, junk out!!! In my opinion, dA could do well to fire the entire security team who monitor their site..., because they may be allowing a lot of their personal opinions and views to influence others(and we all know that the ones handling the cameras and pageviews just might not be the best artists...Therefore, they may be carrying their opinions, views, and various philosophies in their job, thus making it more difficult for dA to make the bigger bucks in the long run...After a while, many of them end up hating their job because they are supposed to conform to the upper management who, may very well not know what their workers are doing in the background but just see the sales slipping to horrifying lows...You know, I am not just a dA subscriber..., I'm also a customer, and every piece of artwork that I view is a potential purchase for me should I decide that I need or want that piece of artwork in my residence. I spent $30.00 at Christmas for one one 12X18 print because I really wanted that print for my place...But, I will also take into account how I am treated as a customer when I'm considering future purchases...Most everybody who knows me realizes that I really do make a loyal and good friend and will never purposely hurt anyones feelings or person based on the "Do unto others'..." golden rule!!! In short, if by some chance that I have hurt anothers' feeling, I know that I'm big enough to own up to it and make my apologies when necessary, but I have been hurt by others who do not, e.g., the security desk never responded when my maibox was being hits by some very nasty insults, I had to bear them all by myself as a new dA member!!! Still, I do not block anyone from my site, but allow them to be themselves, and therefore any unnecessary negative energy will always return back to them!!! Personally, If I were the owner of this awesome and incridible dA enterprise..., I would never allow dA artists' inboxes to be able to be bombarded and/or hacked or hijacked...I would also have my entire staff deal with everyone and everything "head-on"(directly and immediately) in order not to allow a situation to develop or grow detrimentally!!!
Ok, thank you for allowing me to state all this..., the only responses I have gotten back from dA have been about my account status(money)...Under the circumstances..., I'm actually in awe of dA and truly believe it has a lot of potential as a growing money-making enterprise should dA decide to take a good hard look at the various factors prohibiting real growth and productive expansion of dA's enterprise!!! And, as always..., thanks for taking the time to listen and respond...it means that someone in dA really does care...someone!!!

Thanks Paulo! The place would have driven you and it certainly did Bob for although the flowers were quite beautiful, and some of the orchids quite rare varieties... the "background" of old greenhouses, brick walls, and just junk was incredible it was like trying to photograph flowers in a junk yard or a landfill so I was especially pleased with how this one turned out!!

I'm delighted that you like it Paulo! and I really appreciate the
