A crackle in the night sky drew the beasts' heads towards the stars. There were no clouds. No ships. No suggestion of what had created the sudden noise yet its thundering echo remained. It reminded him of an explosion. It caused turmoil to twist in his chest. Whatever it was...it was close…

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

He sniffed the air. The crisp dirt and smell of the mountain breeze was relaxing, and any other night it would have has eased his tension. Now though it only pulled a snarl from his mandibles as the scent lingering on the breeze made his stomach growl. Blood.

Trudging forward he crept slowly near the edge of the rock ledge that would lead further down the mountain. It was painfully easy to track the faint smell left behind from his future prey. Not enough scent to suggest a near fatal wound but enough to make this surely the easiest snack he had gotten in a long while.

Weaving down between the boulders that loomed around him, his white hulking form was deceptively silent. He froze immediately. A faint thump had sounded maybe a few strides away. His heart began to pick up. His muscles quivered. Peaking around the corner of his hiding place he watched the small form crawl back to its feet, clearly having stumbled on the loose rocks. It seemed to wander a few paces before turning left...then right… its movements suggested it was disoriented. Taking in a slow quiet breath he readied himself. Like a cat preparing to pounce the massive beast crouched down and with a speed unknown to any other creature his size he sprang over the rock and cracked down onto his target.

His head coiled back in a snarl as his mandibles flared. Flailing wings were frantic as he quickly pinned the small form beneath him. It was hard to process where to bite with the wings flashing in his face and bright lights seeming to glow from this unknown animal. For such a tiny thing it was difficult to keep a hold of. His numb finger tips struggled to grasp onto the thrashing thing yet to his shock and dismay his claws could not pierce the gold plating of his prey. It let out an angry screech seeming to understand his intentions and sent a flurry of noises in his direction.

Its words landed on hollow ears and were nothing but gibberish. The pattern seemed familiar though as he leaned his weight onto the small thing, crushing it into the gravel. He froze when something gave underneath him and the winged animal let out an all too human cry.

Jumping back he let out a startled hiss. His neck snaking low as he circled the creature on all fours at a distance. His claws scraping loudly against the rocks. His gaze was calculating as he studied this new interest. One of the creature's wings was limp to the ground now with an unnatural twist at one of the joints. His prey surely wouldn't be escaping now but as the other wing stretched forward pushing the being to its hands and knees he stopped his prowling.

The figure was clearly humanoid but it was hard for his brain to process the wings. It looked human and had clearly sounded human but the language it spoke was foreign and he couldn't recall having ever seen a human with such wings when he had travelled with the UNSC. This prey would not be so easy now.

His hunger began to vanish and was replaced with silent curiosity. Sitting back on his haunches he tilted his head simply watching and soaking in all the information his eyes were giving him.

The ‘human’ was still on edge and clearly hurting. The subtle movements of her head showed she was looking for a way to escape but was just as confused as him. His eyes held a stern analytical gaze but the ones across from him were too afraid to look away. Too afraid……...afraid…

Another scent caught in his throat. He could almost taste it. The pain. His mandibles curled up instinctively into a low growl as the human now managing to its feet took a step back from the massive albino beast.

The labs..the experiments.. It all made his skin crawl angrily but it wasn't towards this human. No...but she carried that same chemical smell. The one that made his skin itch uncomfortably.

The pleasing smell of prey had twisted into one of painful memories. A waver in the humans stanced pulled him from his old thoughts that threatened to drown him and it was then he spotted the blood. It matted the fur draped around her shoulders and the crack in the gold plated helmet she wore now explained her disorientation.

A short scoffed vented between his teeth making her tense as he rose to his feet and walked forward. His stomach twisted uncomfortably at the sight of human blood but pressing forward his curiosity was stronger.

Her tone was pleading as she staggered back raising her arms defensively as though weighing whether she should run or fight. Neither idea seemed to appeal to her as defeat crossed her face. As he reach for her with his massive claws her form wavered and would have collapsed had he not grabbed the light weight being. Clearly the stress and adrenaline of wherever she had gotten these wounds from, combined with his monstrous presence had been too overwhelming for her. She was still breathing but unconscious and would likely need help he couldn't provide.

Slowly placing her over his shoulder he was shockingly gentle in his motions. Guilt pricked his chest at having accidentally hurt the weird-looking-and-lost human but he knew a few humans that were trustworthy and would help her when he brought her to them.

i told myself i was gonna wait closer to the contests due date before posting this as a surprise but that lasted like 2 days and here i am posting X'D and gosh i probably spent AT LEAST 45 minutes prior to starting this, digging through Rottens gallery taking notes and digging for every ref of my favorite boi that i could find, then proceeded for another 5 and a half hrs to come up with this
