Here’s a bunch of Zutara sketches (ignore the hands, I’m still having trouble figuring hands out, especially guy hands. I’m used to drawing girls and drawing guys is a different thing entirely. I have to work on that too because I don’t want to make guys look girly when I draw them). I can really like Zutara but not always (it has to be gradual, they do have a lot of things going against them, including themselves). I know that it will never happen in canon, and I’m okay with that. I only support Zutara when it’s an AU in Season 1 or 2 (by Season 3, I would prefer just friendship but if well done could live with it). I don’t really like the angst aspect and “We love each other but can’t be together because of this or that,” of Zutara being overused (or Mai and Aang being brought in too as love interests, which over complicates things).Rather than skipping to them being in love and the challenges preventing them from being together I would prefer their feelings being the focus. When the change from hate to friendship to something more is done slowly, with a big dose of denial, that’s when I really like Zutara.

As for Maiko… I really don’t like it at all. I tried to like them, I honestly did, but I just can’t get myself to. I feel that their romance was forced (I think friendship suits them much better). I just pretend that Maiko never happened and they were just friends instead. I don’t like it for two reasons: the way they got together in the show and their personalities. It feels like they just randomly got together, there was no build up. And when they were together all of their interactions felt very… dull to me. I personally think that they both need someone who can help them learn to express themselves more (Like Zuko and Jin, even with their short time together I really liked them). Ironically I ship Zuko with pretty much every girl except the one he is technically with, Mai.

But it you like or really support Maiko and want to draw for them, you can do that. Just because I dislike the couple doesn’t mean you can’t like it. I’m not going to be mean to someone because of their options on fictional characters love lives. I mean, I won’t go out of my way or anything to find Maiko fan art but if I come across one that I really like I’ll favorite it. Not everyone is going to have the same opinion on pairings and that’s okay, it gives variety to the fandom. (Sorry, for this being so long…)
