Description
This is a really old Self Portrait back in college. It was hard to keep myself concentrated on the hand in the mirror and attached to me while drawing it.I was about 10 years younger than now in this drawing.

i have to concentrate really hard to draw just faces. i go into a different "mode" so to speak when drawing portraits as opposed to drawing my comic and illustrations.

I know what you mean, portraits are so personal; when I see one coming together, it's almost like "oh there you are".
Having said that I think you need a lot more imagination for illustrations. I find it so hard to hold a concept in my mind. Hopefully that will come in time, then you'll see an explosion of illustrations from me lol!

How do think up the characters?

i watch a lot of cartoons and anime and i read a lot of comics and manga. inspiration just kind of comes from other things, i guess. I'm even inspired by the awesome characters that draws.

I know how hard this is, I too, did a similar drawing in college:
*but mine had an added wrikle* I had to hold a mirror (facing me)
while my back was to our hallway mirror, hard to describe the finished drawing, I will try to put it up.

LOL! you're so cute! But did you notice there isn't a single straight line in it? See? I'm not a good Mech drawer like you. Most of my images are curvy and organic. I have problems with straight lines and mechanical gear.

did you notice that your curvy lines make my straight ones seems like ordinary scribbles? and that you are a drawer much better than me? I really dont think you should have any problem with straight lines, maybe you're just saying it to yourself ^ ^

Well, that's how much I hate drawing straight lines. I just get really bored really fast and start thinking,"Man, I wish I was drawing something else right now." I just kinda hate it. I could try drawing mechs, but I'm scared I would lose interest on them too. They are also really hard to draw. I applaud you for being courageous enough to draw them and do it so well.

I have a B.F.A. in drawing and painting, but I don't do that stuff anymore right now. I had so many years of art school beating the cartoons out of me, that now it's cartoon and illustration time-I'll switch back eventually, but I don't have any of my stuff (easels, supplies, drawing tables etc. it's all in storage right now and I don't have room for it. I plan on setting up an art room in the future for the purpose of drawing more things like those, but I'm really tired of drawing real stuff right now. I have this new motto for maybe the next six or so years (that'll make ten from the year I started drawing cartoons like crazy).
This motto goes: "It's not worth drawing if you can just take a picture of it"--- To me this means it is much more of a challenge to make something up in your head from scratch, than it is to draw what's right in front of you--and I take on the challenge! I am aware you can draw things differently than you see them too--I spent a whole semester putting imaginary wings on nude models!
Now, before you scold me, please know that I have taken YEARS of traditional art classes (--even before that drawing was created--I've been drawing seriously for the last fifteen years--or since I was around thirteen. I want to change it up because it gets old for me. But I know you are just trying to encourage me to do more stuff.
