Description Woodcut print on Kitakata paper, 15 x 12 in

The woodcut was carved from MDF. I rolled red ink over the plate first and then went back over the face and lines with black ink.

I was inspired to make a daruma doll after I thought I had lost the one I bought at Disney World Epcot Japan. Turns out I had left it in the car when I was moving all my stuff to my apartment phew!

Now for some info from Wikipedia! A Daruma doll is a Japanese doll modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism. According to legend, Bodhidharma sat facing a wall in meditation for a period of nine years without moving, which caused his legs to fall off from atrophy. Another popular legend is that after falling asleep during his nine-year mediation, he became angry with himself and cut off his eyelids to avoid ever falling asleep again. His discarded eyelids are said to have sprouted the first tea plant.

The dolls are seen as a symbol of perseverance and good luck. The eyes of Daruma are often blank when sold. The recipient of the doll fills in one eye upon setting the goal, then the other upon fulfilling it. In this way, every time they see the one-eyed Daruma, they recall the goal.

fun
ya MDF is good but I hate when it starts to get all fibrous after you print a few times. Love hate relationship I suppose...

Yeah, it does start to get kind of feathery or something after a while, especially around the details. I'm trying to take good care of the plate so I can keep it to a minimum >.< Thank you for the fav! :3

Thanks! I liked the mdf because I could carve in any direction without having to worry about grain and it was pretty soft. Still felt like I had less control than with lino, but it was my first time working with mdf so I'm hoping to get some more practice with it
