How do you block and shade everything smoothly and uniformly? Whenever I try to block or shade in Krita, all my brush strokes visibly overlap each other resulting in a messy, flat looking cluster of lighter and dark parts.

I draw a value scale, and then color pick from it.Β You could also color pick off the image (if you have a pressure sensitive stylus - it can give you variety of tones).Β One quick tip, never pick black.Β The darkest you should go is about 3/4 of the way toward black (very dark gray) - because pencils are not black.
it is the equivalent of using pencils of different hardness (JD Hillberry uses varying pencil hardness).

Fooled me as did most all of your monotones, mistook them for graphite work. Β Never ceases to amaze me what can be done with digital probably because I have never did anything with it. Β (And that last statement is ludicrous considering I've owned a Bamboo tablet and had Krita and Gimp on my desktop for more than three yeas now, but I keep it well dusted anyway. Β )Β Β

OH! I understand about getting a good shot of one's work that's why when I want a really good reproduction I take it to a professional art printer I know and just have him digitally copy it, ten dollars and I get a perfect shot every time. Β About as close to digital as I've managed to get. Β Β (Sometimes I'll spring for a single print but not often, restrictive Β fixed incomes are a bitch.)
