The idea was to create a balance between Good and Evil, instead of Creating a conflict between the two. Good and Evil are inseparable.When God gave Adam the Garden he told him not to eat of the Tree of Good and Evil, Life and Death. This proves that even in the beginning Good and Evil existed even in God's perfect world. One only exists where the other exists.
Good and Evil are like soul mates, always finding each other.

The eastern philosophy of evil being a necessary part of a perfect world (yin yang) makes excuse for evil.. in this philosophy evil is loved not hated, it is accepted not abhorred. There is no excuse for evil. Good and evil cannot be soul-mates regardless of how poetic the idea tries to sound; because good and evil oppose each other, they do not embrace each other. Evil, in the sense of selfish and harmful manifestations of will, became possible in the creation of free moral beings. Beings which existed in the spiritual realm first, but now also exist in the physical.
It seems the emphasis on knowledge was missed, and placed upon what the knowledge was of, namely good and evil.
