First off let me point out that the star ratings are merely placeholders. Judging from the title I assume your image is based on the book (which I haven't read), so I can't really say anything about the conceptual merit. The technique, however, is very good. You have created a fairly elaborate scene in comparison to many other works in the photomanip-gallery. I like how you used several layers of depth to create a complex composition. As usual, the coloring in your image is very vibrant and directs the viewers attention to the focus of the scene. The effects are well done, too.

My critique at this point is mostly directed at two specific aspects:

First, although it's actively attacking our 'hero', the dragon feels quite lifeless. Obviously that's because the original stock photo was a statue, so it's not really your fault. But a possible way to improve this could be to repaint the eyes and therefore add more life to them. However, if the dragon is supposed to be a statue forget what I just said. Also, the dragon seems fairly bright. I for one would increase the contrast just a little.

Second, the plants/tentacles are a bit plain. As a consequence they stand out between the mostly photographic elements. Some details like a soft texture, additional leaves or varying sizes (meaning a lot of thinner ones wrapped around the thick tentacles) may help to make them a little more interesting.

It's good, but the lighting composition of the dragon doesn't look good

thank you for the critique!

There's a book by that name? I didn't even know

The lifelessness of the dragon was one of my problems, too, maybe I should take some time to try the eye-trick you mention

The plants in front are blurred for depth of field so it's hard to get some structure into them. I was a bit unhappy with how they turned out to be honest, but lost patience trying to fix them

Yes, I get that the ones on the foreground have to be blurry for a nice DoF-effect. That's why I also suggested additional smaller vines, although I'm not sure if this will help. Mixing photos with painting or other media and to make it look nice at that is always very cumbersome, I agree.
Anyway, you're welcome! Nice work, once again.

and I'm not the best painter - but working on the basics I think for smaller vines my patience ran out

It's been a long time since I was commenting here, but lets try to do it "old fashioned way" without just "wow" and "+1"

I like the composition and as always lighting is "solid" and "logic" (if you know what I mean)
Detail level is good and the mythical atmosphere is definately there.

I have only one problem with this image: the main scene (dragon + wizard) are a bit flat. It's not the problem that lighting is making it flat. For me the scene would be much more dynamic if the "camera" was not from the side but a little behind the wizard. That would add some depth and dynamism aswell. It's not a critique to your skills, because I am well aware of the stock photos limitation . It's just going around my head when I look at this image.

On a sidenote: when I see my devwatch now, with your recent works I can see that you could really start doing illustrations for fairytales . Love them,
Regards,
J

you're still here! I hope you've been well!

Thank you for your words - I agree that the view would be cooler if it weren't so "straight on". As for doing illustrations, unfortunately my muse is more absent than here, so it remains a wonderful compliment (especially coming from you) but not more.

I am on a quest for finding my inspiration aswell. When I'll finally find it, I'll surely share with you so I could see a book with your illustrations
