The over all softness of the colour palette and digital brushwork actually makes me feel like I'm floating, just like the amazing and beautifully coloured goldfish we see here!
It kinda feels like it's jumped straight out of a Studio Ghibli film!
But that aside, I simply love the simplicity of this piece, as well as the textures that make every look close to realistic.
If you hadn't said this was done digitally I would've believed you painted it!
All in all I think its a warm, relaxing and beautiful piece of work!
Well done, I am thoroughly impressed by your skill.

Awesome color palette, the clouds are done super well, the goldfish looks lovely, it's really surreal, and I love all of the little fish flying around the goldfish. I kind of wish the goldfish looked a little more "finished" though - a lot of the scales on the fish are just sketchy looking blotches of color, and this would benefit SOOO much from just increasing the level of detail on the fish's head, giving it some crisper borders to separate the fish head from the back tail, keeping the sketchy texturing as it recedes into space, and applying some atmospheric perspective to make the fish almost disappear as it goes back in the sky. Irregardless, it's a great piece.

Thank you for your critique and you are absolutely correct. This is, in fact, an unfinished project. I was actually in the process of redoing the goldfish, bit by bit, which is also why the eye looks a bit off. Unfortunately, I had a deadline to make (as this was a submission for my school's creative magazine) and I had to submit it just like this. Nonetheless, thank you for the compliments and for the critique!

This has a soft and calming effect to it. The clouds remind me of a delicate painting style and you captured the transparency very well. What I would suggest for the cloud directly behind the fish is that you fill in the empty blue sky around its body with the rest of the cloud. I think it would create better contrast between the fish and the cloud behind it, and make the fish stand out a bit better.

The colors you chose go very well together- warm orange and sky blue.

The fish looks beautiful and the anatomy seems good to me. If you wanted the fish to have a more dynamic pose, I would suggest having the back-end of its tail curving towards the fin on top of its' body. This way, I think the viewer's eye would naturally follow the curve towards the fish and it would help center the focus on the fish.

Overall this is a well done piece.

First, thank you so much for taking your time to critique my work!

Second, that cloud behind the fish is sort of parted like that to give the feeling that the fish moved through hence movement in the piece. But I do understand that continuity is also important and would have created more contrast.

I looked at some reference pictures to figure out what a goldfish really looks like. I didn't really want to make a big ole' childish-looking fish. In the end I picked one of the goldfish that had well .. less fins than the rest. And yeah. I'll take the pose of the figure into more consideration next time.

Thank you again!

You're very welcome. And I see what you mean about the clouds now. I was just giving some suggestions in case you wanted to go in another direction with it. It's a very nice piece- better than most on deviantart. :3

Hi, this is really a beautiful piece of art! I like the fantastic colors and the wonderful contrast by your choice of working with complementaries! The floating goldfish appears gentle, majestic and mysterious. I also like the flying scales and birds. The only things I might suggest is to make the clouds some kind of softer, and add some reflections and some scales on the fish itself, if they're not already all floated away. So maybe check for some reference for clouds and goldfishes on google or so. But nevertheless your work is really great, so keep it up! Cheers e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>!

Oh man, I remember this artwork, I love everything about it ^^.

Where to start?Ā

The colors; the orange and blue work perfectly here, It sort of has a watercolor feel to it. What makes this one unique from other works involving flying fish is the comparison between he flock of goldfish and the seagulls from far back.

One of the best works I've ever seen in deviantart. ^^Ā

Stuff like this always makes me happy.

Nice use of color in the overall painting. Really love the way you paint the goldfish fins and tail, showing some transparency with the blue sky showing through Ā

this reminds of what i used to do with my goldfish years ago i would lay down and hold the bowl and just watch them swim around watching me as i watched them silently they on occasionally stop and just float in the bowl

Kuroudy In reply to soulmankicks [2013-03-30 13:49:17 +0000 UTC]

Sounds cool - especially if you held it up to the window, then it would be exactly like this - swimming in the sky.

Nice, I really like the ethereal feel to the piece, and the fins look very lifelike. The clouds also look very good, and the concept is great!

I do suggest taking another look at the fish's eye, as well as possibly adding some scales to the fish.
But otherwise, this is a lovely piece.

Glaiceana [2013-03-27 16:04:21 +0000 UTC]

Very colourful! The clouds are very nice and I like the details you've added with the purple tones in them. I would say that you need to lighten the tail a bit more so that it looks more like it is in the distance, at the moment it kind of looks too close to the head and could be mistaken for coming out of the head itself Some more shadows might also help with the depth in this piece, like under the fish's belly for instance.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Kuroudy In reply to Glaiceana [2013-03-28 01:23:41 +0000 UTC]

Mhhh.. I tried to leave a bit of a blurred effect to the tails more in the rear while making the other larger tail a darker orange. And yeah, you're right, could use more shadows on the belly.

I like how you did the clouds here very layered and painterly. I like that you have all of the other little goldfish around the giant goldfish.

Lovely composition!
It follows the rule of thirds plus the flocking is easy on the eye.
Color-contrast is good, just like the way you balance out the picture with the flock of birds on the right side.

By making those white, you direct the attention of the viewer to the goldfish, which results in this lovely weight-balance which is tilted more to the left.

The overall "painted" feel is also something I enjoy looking at! Nice job c:

Look at you, using art terms c:
You're the first to notice the birds I believe.
I wanted the feeling of coming and going. The birds are flocking away whereas the fish are coming forward.
