After almost three years I've finally started to work on my project again! This is a comic I'm creating that is a re-telling of the story of the huskies that were left behind during a Japanese expedition to Antarctica in 1958. Many people may already know this story because of the Disney movie "8 Below"... My goal is to retell the story without the happy, Disney flare and to try to stay a bit more accurate to the true story.

I will be trying to keep my descriptions to a minimum, as I'm hoping the story will be fairly self explanatory, however, feel free to ask any questions and I'll be more than happy to answer them.

I actually have the first 3 pages to the comic done, but I'll be uploading the other pages between 10 - 14 days, this way I can hopefully be consistent on page release dates.

Please do not take these pages without my permission.

As you can see, all the characters have new looks... I hope to post up character sheets of them all in the near future.

I am so glad I am not the only person who does things like this. Right now I myself am working on a comic for Tilikum the whale.

Have you seen the original movie? It's way more accurate than Eight below and 100000 times better!

Yes! A long time ago when I was twelve. I remember crying so hard through the whole movie. I wish I could find it again. They have the end on Youtube where taro and jiro are running across the arctic. thats the most I can find.

That's awesome! I've looked for it before but I must not have searched properly. Thank you very much for that. I really wish I would have found it again before making my comic, lol. It would have given me some good ideas. Oh well!

I'm all for that! I like Disney, really, but sometimes the Disney style doesn't mix well with certain things. Great job so far!

Yeah honestly I'm surprised Disney even did this story because its not really a happy one :\

Well, a lot of the original princess stories ended sadly. I guess they wanted to put a positive spin on it.

It's very nice; I hate to be a pain in the ass, but the dogs aren't hooked up to a sleigh like that.

Usually there's on line and the dogs are paired to the line.

Dogs can actually be hooked up like this - it's called a fan hitch. You'll see this hitch used more for arctic exploration and also natives tend to use this hitch because they don't run the dogs on trails, rather they are running them across the arctic.

You'll see the dogs hooked up to a single gang line most of the time though. That sort of hitching makes it much easier to traverse through thin trails in the woods.

There's a link and you can also just search "dog mushing fan hitch" and some stuff comes up. Again, it's definitely not the most popular hook up.

I actually used to dog much so I could never imagine actually using a fan hitch It would be way too chaotic for me!!

I will admit that I did screw up the harnesses though. I should have researched what the H-Back harness looks like instead of trying to go off of memory...

No, no, no, it's fine, I'd just never seen anything like that before. I'd never consider it as an option cause it gives the dogs so much leeway to pull in different directions

KurisuchinK In reply to VampireLouislove [2011-11-08 21:48:30 +0000 UTC]

yeah I totally agree! It has to be total chaos. Oh, and I think another reason they use a fan is that way when they are running over the ice and a dog falls through the entire team doesn't fall through. At least that makes sense to me. lol

Thanks! Yeah the story is actually really interesting and they built a statue of one of the surviving dogs in Japan. I won't mention which ones actually survive, in case you're not familiar with the story and want it left as a surprise

Yeah, I;ve heard the story just not all the details. It's also been awhile since I last saw the movie. I'll go look into it, thanks!

KurisuchinK In reply to TheLoneDucky [2011-11-06 06:37:13 +0000 UTC]

No problem. Although I will admit that I have never been able to find too many details on what actually happened on that expedition. Guess there just was never too much coverage on it. :\

Cause people are dorks and dun like doing their history homework. Oh well, we'll just make the most of it, won't we?

KurisuchinK In reply to TheLoneDucky [2011-11-06 17:58:44 +0000 UTC]

Sure will! At least I can't have people coming back at me and going "well actually, the way history has it written this and this happened" lol.
