I need HELP!!!! There's a character in my book, and I keep wavering on whether to have her as a major or minor character. Her name is Eloise and she's the sister of two major characters, so it could go either way.

Pull a pride and prejudice and make her a sister that suddenly becomes relevant later on in the book.

AgentBabycakes In reply to kosvana [2014-04-06 20:56:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, she is the daughter of the dead dude, so even if she's a minor character, she's relevant in that way.

Maybe she can be that important side character who rarely appears but everytime they do they say something important.

I guess that's sort of what I made her.

I probably know your answer, but I have a question about a sort-of-minor-but-more-prominent character.

His name is Dustin, and he's a friend of the main investigators. He's besties with Rene-Charles, who is friends with the teen detective kids and a part-time detective himself. (You remember Rene-Charles, right? French college student? One half of America's Sweethearts, with his initially-undercover-lover Willie-Jay*?) He is shortish and has blond hair, blue eyes, and a bump in his nose. He's funny, friendly, incredibly intelligent, and a little arrogant. And probably kinda slutty.

My question deals with his love life. Dustin dates a girl called The Panther. (Her real name is Bianca, but she's referred to by her name, like, once in six books.) She doesn't really get a lot of screen time; her elusiveness is sort of a running gag. As it stands, it's *implied* that he might be bisexual. While Rene-Charles is definitely bisexual, they don't have a thing. They're just two dudes who like dudes and they hang out together. My question is, does he have an ex-boyfriend for sure, which would be mentioned?

There are really three ways he would feel about that:
-He's just real nonchalant about it.
-He still has feelings for this guy.
-It was a really bad breakup and basically if the ex comes within the vicinity, Dustin's gonna dive under the table or something. (Then again, considering how God-awful Rene-Charles' break-up with his ex-girlfriend was, that could also be him. Like, literally, if he saw her, he'd dive under the table.)

Oh, and the ex is probably friends with Darry, the stepfather of one of the narrators and foster father of the other two. (Because Darry is friends with everybody.)

(Or maybe do Dustin and The Panther break up amicably and he and Dustin get (back?) together? Maybe The Original Panther is just called Bianca and this dude becomes The Panther.)

*They were originally named Paul-Julien and Errol, but I changed their names.

Hmmmmmm,,, I would say that he's just real nonchalant about it. Like, "yea, we dated. broke up on mutual terms, you know?"

Actually, I'm now thinking of having them together in the end. But how do I get rid of the girl? If she was ever there?

I mean, she wasn't a beard. Dustin def liked her. And I can see the guy (Bryant) playing hard-to-get at first, before they get together.

Would Dustin dating Bianca, and then seeing Bryant and falling for him and breaking up with Bianca work? Cause he wouldn't want to cheat on her, because he's not an asshole, but he also wouldn't want to lead her on, because he's not an asshole, but he'd also want to be with his lovely auburn-haired Charlestonian boy.

(If that happens, there will probably be a reference to narrator Gemma's fave song, "Call Your Girlfriend" by Robyn. Possibly Dustin wondering what he'll do about Bianca, and everyone else starts singing "Call your girlfriend... it's time you had the talk... give your reasons... say it's not her fault... but youuuuuu just met somebody neeeeeeeeww...")

Aawawaaa, make him a heart jumper and jump to the other one!! That works, actually. uwu)b

Also, give me a quick list of the most gender-neutral names you know. I NEED THEM FOR YET ANOTHER NEW CHARACTER.

AgentBabycakes In reply to kosvana [2014-04-11 21:43:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Especially with the Call Your Girlfriend reference. That's what I'm thinking.

The only thing left is, is Bianca The Panther? Do I save that nickname for Bryant? Or does that nickname get regifted?

Let's see:
Dakota
Jessie
Charlie (Charles or Charlotte)
Casey
Riley
Bailey (although I personally think Bailey's a boy's name, but that's because my cousin Bailey's a boy)
Cameron
Peyton
Quinn
Hayden
Jamie
Alex
Avery
Reese
Jordan
Taylor

Riley and Quinn !!!! Hmmmm, those might work! Maybe a derivative of either one, since I like using strange names.

It's another dystopian, hahaha. Kinda, more like a broken utopia.

In this one, magic and futuristic science coexist, just not in peace. A long time ago, Magi ran the world, and they were put on pedestals by everyone. Only some people were Magi, some entire cultures were Magi, some cultures had no Magi at all. Until scientific advancement began to develop. Many people were gifted with scientific minds, and entire cultures of them discovered themselves. However, both Magi and Scientifics wanted power, and wars erupted, genocide was frequent, and stigma between both ran rampant. Magi managed to hold power, until one day, a Scientific and his radical political cult developed a weapon of mass destruction and used it to finally fring the Magi down and oppressed them for some time. Civil rights movements happened, and Magi earned their rights alongside the Scientifics, however, the Scientifics hold the power now, though some countries still have Magi in power. Now, almost one century has passed since the last major war, and stigma still reigns between both. In the contemporary, there is a massive underground movement that fights for the social rights of the Magi, run by a man called Bo Venenatus. The country the story takes place in is run by a man called Lawrence Casta.

Now, our main character lives in a big city, similar to New York. They are in their late teens, early adulthood. Their name is probably going to be something like Tel Adelaide, idek, maybe. They are androgynous (doesn't look too much like either gender), asexual (feels no romantic/sexual attraction to ANY gender or any one), and agender (doesn't identify under any gender). But that's not their defining trait, their defining trait is actually that fact that they are very softspoken and doesnt talk much. This becomes symbolic later on.
As a teenager, they are ALL for civil rights, especially for the Magi, knowing what they went though in recent years. So, they join the underground movement along with their friends:

Junko, a boy who is neither a scientific nor a magi, very loyal kid with very distinct eyes.

and Opala, a girl who is from a Magi family, and is a very open-minded girl with dreads.

(Note: Opala and Junko never get together, there isn't really any romance in there)

Now, the main character begins to feel uneasy, and soon realizes that Bo is a radical who has extremely dark intentions, and motivates his followers to commit heinous crimes against Scientifics, even if they are completely innocent people, saying it doesnt matter because "Magi have suffered more and it's time they realize." After they bomb an apartment complex where mostly Scientific families live, the main character has enough. They speak up, but end up getting in a really bad fight and kicked out. Tel is badly beaten and left in the alley, luckily, Junko and Opala were just on their way to the meeting with Bo, and find Tel and take them home. Tel feels awful, and doesn't want their parents to know, since they do not know they are in a radical cult.

The kicker is this, Tel is mixed. Their dad is a Magi, and their mom a Scientific. Both were wonderful and caring parents, and always tried to teach Tel about equality and good treatment of all people, Magi, Scientific, and neither. Tel never really knew which bubble to fall under, and thus is conflicted about it all.

Fed up with the counter-productive hostility of the Magi Peace Movement, Tel cuts their hair and changes the way they dress, goes back to the headquarters, saying that they apologize for their outburst and changed their ways, just to destroy the movement from the inside.

plot rises from there.

Where do you come UP with this awesome stuff?!

See, I want to write a scifi book someday, which is kind of weird because I'm not a huge scifi person (though I'd read the shit out of your books), but I just kind of want to try it someday. But at this point in my life, any scifi book I wrote would just be me traveling back in time so I could annoy Tadeusz Kosciuszko in person. So, needless to say, I'm not writing that.

I come up with this stuff when im bored in class, aha.

I would actually prefer to make my stories movies, ahaaaa, considering what a huge cinephile i am. I think I like sci-fi a lot because that's what I grew up on, watching movies like iRobot, books like Brave New World, and the like. Also, because science fiction allows me to make HUGE social criticisms and satirize society with more deep meaning.

BUT, I am writing a drama, I assure you. I just can't think of a name for the main character yet, ahaha.

Or sometimes I'll doodle a person and think, im gonnA DO SOMETHING WITH YOU.

Well, this one is more focused on a psychological aspect of a person. Basically, the main character dealing with heavy depression and stark loneliness, as well as coping with the world around her.

It's split up into two parts. Purgatorio and Primavera.

Purgatorio:

The first one starts in her penultimate year of high school. She begins developing her illness at that point, but doesnt really realize it. She basically thinks it's just stress of school getting to her a little too much. She begins to become aware of her own loneliness, how much she really stands out, and begins to realize the toxicity of some of her relationships. She even begins to realize the level of abuse she is second-handedly facing at home. It carries on into her first two years of college, reaching a climactic point when her friend rescues her from a dazed attempt at suicide. Part one ends there, with her brief internal monologue realizing the value of her own life. Purgatorio focuses on the present day, on what is going on in those moments for our MC.

Primavera:

In part two, she is now a well-received sleep psychologist, studying sleep patterns, dreams, and how it affects patients during consciousness. She is now married to a heart surgeon, and has a daughter, who is 7 at the beginning of Primavera. Primavera will be more of a focus on the relationship between the main character and her daughter, mainly because the daughter begins to exhibit behaviors similar to what the main character went through during Purgatorio. Also, there is more flashbacks during this section, including traumatic events she blocked out that reflect her life at the current, and good memories she uses to help her daughter. MC still faces severe depression and loneliness, mainly because she refused to seek professional help bc she was convinced nothing is wrong with her. Climactic points in Primavera include a severe fight with her husband, MC causing a scene at a Back to School Night bc some kid was bullying the daughter, flashback to MC and husband's wedding, and a slightly older daughter confessing to MC that she feels hopeless and lonely. Primavera, once again, focuses on the mother-daughter relationship, and how it began to help her reach her goal of recovering from those intense emotions.

I kind of want MC to have a name that references a greek goddess, perhaps Hera.
Husband will be named Dietrich for sure.
Daughter... I want her to also have a greek connection ...
Friend from college will be named Asima

AgentBabycakes In reply to kosvana [2014-04-19 04:49:06 +0000 UTC]

Hera for the MC's name for sure.

Daughter should be named Cybele (although that's the goddess of fertility, so is that weird for a seven-year-old girl?) because it's close to Sybil which is the name of Sybil Ludington who was a badass.

And that sounds amazeballs.

kosvana In reply to AgentBabycakes [2014-04-19 05:09:23 +0000 UTC]

I wanted Hera from the beginning, so good !! >7<)b

And I think I will title the story something like: Purgatory of Spring. Purgatory in Spring. idek, some title connecting the two parts.

Ooooh Cybele might work, maybe, though the fertility thing does seem off for a young girl. Though the daughter does represent new beginning and rebirth, in a way.

But as I was researching, I kind of figured that Hera was actually a really shitty mom. So instead, I'll base their names off of Demeter and Persephone, since they actually had a loving relationship. Also, it fits with the allegory of springtime and hell.

AgentBabycakes In reply to kosvana [2014-04-20 01:12:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that might be a better idea. The Demeter could be Demetria.

kosvana In reply to AgentBabycakes [2014-04-20 02:45:26 +0000 UTC]

Maybe just called Dem/Demi throughout the whole novel/story as a nickname, since I dont really plan on revealing her last name until the very end maybe.

And maybe Persephone could be Percy/Percie as a nickname for a longer name that will not be revealed.
