Wow. Very interesting work. The details are amazing, as always with your stuff. Is the character post-processed, or actual geometry in the scene?

Thank you a lot!
The character is a photo with a bit of light painted in on a flat camera facing card. However I usually also create extremely cranked up normal maps to fake relight the character for better integration. Usually avoid 2D elements at all cost, but for small people floating around somewhere modelling them would take way too long for a scene that is made in 10-15 hours.

The breakdown on this is so cool, and really shows the incredible depth of this scene. Oh I totally agree about the characters. Sometimes, if I need a human character in a shot, and it's not worth the laborious task of modeling something static from the ground up, then I have no problem turning to an app like MakeHuman or DazStudio to supply that. Totally depends on the situation. For something like this, I suppose even that much extra geometry would be overkill, and the cutaway looks perfectly fine.
