Description I'm working on getting some more critique before I turn in character design assignments, so I have more time to change things (and a better idea of what to change) before class... I'm guessing that's why I haven't been doing so hot in the class so far.

ANYWAYS.

My goal here is to get appealing dog designs that smack as little of Kobb as possible. Unfortunately the whole style thing is the hard part for me. I plan on playing with more deisngs over the weekend, especially keeping in mind any useful critique I get here.

I like the one chasing the frisbee best . I think that looks least like your style. You know...I think it's got to be the eyes...you do dots for eyes a lot of the time, and I think when you fill them out/describe them more it looks less like your style. (That's might totally not be true..but it's just my thought)

The little dude in the corner with the frisbee makes me happy, though...he's cute!

Yeah, as I keep pumping these out, I keep noticing that I draw almost exactly the same eyes every time. I don't do the dot eyes so much, but I do a lot of small eyes with dot pupils. I guess the question is... how to change that up? I think I'll check out some other peoples' work for some different ways to do eyes.

I'm off to go scan some more possibles so I can get some sweet dA input by tomorrow's class. One of my new favorites is a battle pomeranian.

Yeah, I saw that one....made me laugh, AND it totally doesn't look like you. Guess I can't do the greyhound with the jetpack anymore, though...

The frisbee dog has to be my favourite of the bunch.

I like the great Dane one too, yay for shape pushing! Although I think you could simplify the body just a little bit, maybe, so that it matches up a little more with the head?

The dark one is reading as "dachshund" to me too because of the length of the nose and the ears being not-so-fluffy.

Those three to me have the most personality and I think a lot of it has to do with the posing. You've drawn them in action and that shows a lot more than, say, a static pose like the collie seems to have. I'm not seeing his personality, really. If you were to give him a pose that showed him as maybe ~*~SRS BZNS~*~ for example, it would show you how well the design you have works, and would probably in itself strengthen the design you already have.

!

. . . I want to go design some doggies now. At 3 AM in the morning with my insomnia. 8(

I think I like him too... him and his big ol' feet. C:

Haha, yeah, so it's obvious I didn't ref any of these, except for the border collie (which was more a reference drawing than a design in the end). "Cocker spaniel" for me meant a little dog with big ears, and I even messed that up so he became a little demon dog or something.

Basically, your observations are right on ('specially about the great Dane... so that's what that's called ), and thanks for 'em. I'm kinda tempted to play with a SRS BZNS collie now. X)

Wow.. :'DDD Lovin' the cocker spaniel~~! He looks like he'd have a lot of personality.. Or at least rabies. Though when I first looked at him, I was thought he looked a bit like a dachshund.. Usually I pick out the spaniels for that weird curly fur on their ears. owo They look like they'd be pretty pompous-looking.. Lawl, that could add another dimension to the character design, if you wanted to follow or abandon stereotype.

These are great! I love the two on the right, especially the frizbee dog on the bottom. His feet are awesome

These are all pretty strong.

Ooh... much less to critique here. :nods:

I like the angry one (in shadow) the frisbee one, and the one on the upper left.

I'm not gonna criticize your anatomy because knowing you, you're gonna obsess over the structure anyway. Keep going!

I liked the first batch of designs more, probably because they were inked. Overall I think you've got a pretty good style going here. It's realistic without being too realistic and cartoonish without being too cartoonish. The bottom left one has a better running pose, definite motion. More energetic than the first one you did. Not entirely sure the bottom right one’s legs are anatomically correct. The back legs bend okay, but something weird is going on with the front set. Looks like it’s got some kind of orthopaedic problem. The stalking one at the top and the dark one are the best, there’s a real dynamic pose and feel to them. Keep it up.

It's so different from your normal style! I love the one with its tongue hanging out. I think that's so cool! What a great bunch of designs!
