Description
Assignment #1 for Gildersleeve's Materials and Techniques class: A pencil splash page of a comic you really like. The only negative thing I got in the critique is that it doesn't look like I drew any guys, even though Naota/Ta-kun is a boy. Apparently he looks like a teenage girl. I proved I can draw guys that class though so I hope I'm in the clear.11" x 17" Strathmore Bristol board, 200 series (10" x 15" workspace), 2B Pencil.

The 200 series is apparently really bad for inking, but for this drawing I was only required to use pencil. For inking you'll want 400 series or higher, because it's tougher and won't pick up so much crap when you use a nib. It's all about preference though. I've got a ton of Deleter manga paper that I'm irked to use because it's kinda small (like 9" x 12" or something) and I need to draw big. I also like thick paper, it feels really cool when you hold a stack of it, hahah.

The paper doesn't matter, it's just what you prefer. I like to work larger and on heavier papers, so Strathmore 400 series is the way to go for me. You also have to keep in mind the production size, since sequential art is scaled down for print.

The whole "anime" look in general gets lost in translation when the SEQA department is concerned. I've gotten similar criticism in the past. Also I've seen alot of people drastically change their style just to please their professors. I hope you continue to draw what you like c:

I had that assignment too, but mine ended up not being as good as it needed to be. Partially because I didn't give myself enough time to work on it...similar to right now when I should be working on a project due tomorrow...
