Thank you so much! I used crayons, a hair dryer, and a tiny craft iron to make it.

It's easy. Get some chipped soy wax from your craft store candle section and a small $10 craft iron. A box of crayons and your hair dryer. "Wet" the canvas by melting the clear soy wax on the canvas, then melt puddles of color from your crayons onto the canvas. Use the hair dryer to push the colors around and stop when you like the results.

If you visit my blog here [link] you can see images of us using the craft irons and hair dryers to make these paintings.

Thank you so much for the information. I have bookmarked your blog and will definitely have a go! I would like to try and incorporate this method into one of my acrylic or oil paintings. Do you think this might work?

Yes, but if you use oil by itself it must be on top so it can dry. You can mix clear wax with oil by the way. Just put a blob of oil paint in a coffee filter and let it sit overnight to wick out most of the oil, then blend the color with clear wax. You can use wax over acrylic, but if you put acrylic over the wax you will need to heat it into the wax or it will flake off too easily. The acrylic will not spread or blend well on top of wax, but it does create a cool stringy effect. I suggest you get some canvas paper and play with the different mediums as I did to explore how they react with each other.

I also use a varnish for oil paintings over my encaustic paintings to protect them from being scratched and minimize color transfer onto fingers and walls.
