Description Zeus - Reg. American Pit Bull Terrier

In the last winter Zeus assisted me while on the trails and off the trail plowing through waist high snow, through being able to distribute his weight and allowing me to hold on to him while he eased me out of the drifts. Winter is here...and with a broken foot I found it very difficult navigating through the deep snow...especially if I knelt down for a shot...the getting back up was difficult. Zeus quickly comes back to my side so that I may use him to stand back up without putting weight on my foot. The look seen here is his expression, "are you alright now?"

He has snow on his nose from the power run back to my side.

First off Debbie, I want to thank you so much for the kind comment on Zeus's picture.

I have sent you a note, but I will say now it was a "MAN"...my "MAN's" fault...well maybe not since I could have turned a light on. Never-the-less, I ran into a stool that had been left in the middle of the floor...how I missed the damned thing the first time, I don't know. Zeus had asked out at four am, and I passed through the dark kitchen on auto pilot but on my way back to bed I ran smack into it. It broke tarsals above the joints where the foot and toes join. Ouch! It was more than an ouch...it was beyond even speaking at the time. This happened about two and a half weeks ago and I've crunched my foot three times since then. Tonight it is swollen again and simply throbbing and this due to my foolishness. Anyway, I've sent you a note. Thanks again.

What a beautiful shot of Zeus! You should get a print of this photo and frame it!

What happened that caused you to have broken foot? I do hope that you do not put too much pressure on your foot, especially while photographing subjects from the ground level. I am so glad that Zeus is able to be with you at all times and that he is so extremely helpful.

I will never forget your experience with the intruder in the parking lot of a food store earlier this year and Zeus being there with you. He is definitely quite loyal and very devoted to you as well.

Do you bring Zeus to hospitals, rehabilitation centers, or schools to visit with children with disabilities?

Great shot of Zeus, Joyce!

Thank you Laurice!!!! I always LOVE comments like yours regarding my guy.

What happened to my foot is rather ridiculous, I would laugh even now if it didn't hurt so damned much! Tonight it is particularly swollen and throbbing due in part to my foolishness. Three different times this week I have crunched it (bent) through either slipping or stepping wrong and forcing my foot into a hiking boot.

My foot was broken due to a MAN...my "MAN"-"THE MAN" who can't put things back where they belong...typical man thingy!!! Hmm Anyway, he had been rummaging through a china cabinet and moved a small decorative stool away from the corner...and left it there. Zeus asked out at 4am and I went through the kitchen without turning on the lights...and I have to say...I travel by instinct when I'm half awake. Coming back through the dark familiar kitchen, my foot slammed into this danged stool, upsetting me in the process and breaking two tarsals above the joints in my toes. Hmm...you can stop laughing anytime now.: Probably under normal circumstances I wouldn't have broken the bones above the joints, but it happened that this was a foot that I had totally mashed in a riding accident some years ago...along with a few other major bones. Anyway, it hurts like blazes...worse than the first time if that is possible. Now they don't cast injuries like this so my foot is stabalized and hopefully I don't bend my foot. The thing is, I find it very difficult to get back up after kneeling using only one leg and foot and one hand. One hand because I have my camera in the other. This is where Zeus comes in...such a good boy. So..that is the story of my foot.

Now regarding Zeus. I haven't had him at hospitals, but he has helped three children who were unresponsive to the average stimulus. One boy had never spoken a word and it was thought that he had a major cognitive disability. He was with Zeus for three hours, cuddled up against his side. Zeus is very attentive and kind with children and extremely tolerant. To my surprise, I could have sworn I heard the boy talking...and sure enough he was. This child was brilliant...shockingly so. I stood and watched him, cuddled against Zeus and arms around his neck, talking to Zeus very clearly and then counting to him. It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. After this (3 hours) this boy never stopped talking. He amazed a lot of professionals. Zeus has done the same for other children who are suffering from either emotional trauma or other forms of disabilities. With this Swine Flu rampant, hospitals discourage all visitors and especially 'dogs'.

So, anyway Laurice, that is the scoop on Zeus and I.:

Oh, I am so terribly sorry to hear about your foot, Joyce! I can imagine how upsetting it must be for you to bump into the stool that had been left by your husband. You were so used to the location of certain things as they were before, and I can understand how this truly affected you when you discovered that the stool was in the wrong place when you hit it with your foot. Were you able to see the doctor again and find out what he had to say about it? How about icing the foot to keep the swelling down and trying to move your foot around your ankle and through your toes? Are you taking anything for pain? I do hope that your foot heals properly and that you will be able to walk around much better soon. You take the best care, Joyce, and please do keep me posted on how you are doing!

Thanks Laurice!

I can laugh about it today although I wasn't laughing at the time. I am a very visual person with an over active imagination...and today I 'can' visualize the entire scene of the aftermath of this accident.

I am happy to say, the last two days there is an absence of swelling and throbbing and I am on the mend. Good thing too since I just can't remain sitting and I am my own worst enemy. So as long as I behave myself and refrain from trying to move without caution while I'm in the snow...I should be fine.

Thanks for the kind, kind, words and concern...you make me feel all warm and fuzzy.

I am so glad that you are doing much better and that your foot is healing up well! Just hang in there and be very careful, especially while you walk in the dark (to let Zeus out in the middle of the night) and whenever you venture out in the snow. I am glad that you've got Zeus and he will take great care of you!

You take the best care, Joyce, and enjoy discovering new objects for your photography! And of course, our beloved La Luna whenever the clouds do not block your view of her!

I couldn't agree with you more, there is something here. This particular little boy had been neglected and abused when he was brought to me. In all of his four whole years, he had never spoken a word to anyone. It is suspected during his abuse, a dog had been used and he was absolutely terrified at the sight of dogs, so it was strange that he was brought to me, along with his tiny sister who had horrific injuries. Never-the-less, when the little boy first spied Zeus he went into a paroxysm of screaming and raced away to hide. Zeus looked quite puzzled and then followed the boy, where the child jumped, Zeus jumped and sat down looking at him rather quizzically. This went on until the child remained sitting even with Zeus sitting in close proximity regarding him with the most gentle eyes and seemingly content that the child had finally given up running and screaming. After I was briefed regarding this particular child's disabilities and history, the authorities left, leaving Zeus and I alone with the children, and at which time I attempted to talk to the child, but I admit, he didn't seem to respond although he regarded me very solemnly...so I placed some toys down in front of him and began to prepare our meal...all this time, Zeus sat and watched him. A short while later while I was busy cooking, I could have sworn I heard the little boy talking and that is when I went into the room to find him talking to Zeus- laying on the rug but with his arms tight about Zeus's neck and snugged up tight. I never said anything but just stood and watched, the boy was unaware of my presence, and while I stood there, he carried on quite a conversation with Zeus...and Zeus 'was' paying attention. What shocked me, this tiny boy, all of four years of age, and who had never spoken a word, asked Zeus if he would like him to count for him. He did this, all the way to fifty without hesitation or missed number. When the child became aware of me, he clung a little tighter to Zeus...but...he smiled at me. From that point on he never stopped talking and Zeus never left his side other than bedtime. Since then, he has done this over and over with children who are needy...and those who are not. He 'loves' little children and that is the only time I lose my companion.

There is a sad ending to the story...when the powers to be decided that they would now place the two children in a home and removed them...the boy shutdown again after one outburst..."I want to stay...I want Zeus!" It was heartbreaking. The last I have heard regarding the child, he is not talking at all and has withdrawn into a hard shell.

Zeus seems to communicate with all animals. The feral cats all surround him when he is outside, singing and rubbing on him and it not uncommon to see him checking the property with at least ten cats following him. The house cats also trust and seem to even love him. Spook, (former feral cat) makes a point of giving Zeus a daily grooming from head to tail.

What can I say...he is uncanny and a good dog, my friend, companion, helper and protector.

I thank you so much for your comment. Zeus is truly a sweetheart...my companion and helper. I couldn't resist trying to get some shots today of my snowy world and with a broken foot it is rather foolhardy...but...out I went. Trying to get up from a kneel was excrutiating if I placed the slightest pressure on my foot and of course with one hand holding the camera out of the snow, and the other hand not making a whole lot of difference, Zeus's willing help is wonderful. He spent the last winter hauling me out of deep snow drifts through knowing how to distribute his weight on the snow and he hasn't forgotten a thing today. He truly was looking at me in question as to whether or not I still required his services. Thanks again.

Ahh thank you. Zeus is indespensible to me. He is my companion and helper, helping me negotiate a steep grade or hauling me out of snow drifts. When I pick up my camera, he is at full attention and at my side like a gun dog.
He also 'loves' children, in fact he is rather 'doty' around them, and is a therapy dog for children suffering from various disabilities. Thanks again.
