Description "Suddenly, four of the fighting machines appeared. Monstrous tripods of glittering metal, higher than the tallest steeple, striding over the pine trees and smashing them. Each one held a huge funnel, and I realised with horror that I had seen this awful thing before" (From the War of the Worlds musical, Jeff Wayne, 1978 )

Anyone who has heard of War of the worlds would know what this is, but for those who dont..
Written in 1893 by HG Wells, the War of the worlds is a story about vastly superior alien life taking over earth. The book is great, and I also like the mucical version alot.

is burning me a copy of the original radio broadcast version of the story (the one that had half of England believing there really was a martian attack ) so I felt inspired to do this. I have always dreamed of making a graphic novel about this story..but I want to wait till my watercolour skills are better so I can do a good job.

This would have been a lot better, except that the ink ran and turned all the colours dark and the lines smudgy..which I didnt mind because it kinda suits the mood of the book^^

The design of the machine is largely based on the pictures in the mucical booklet..but with reference to the novel I changed some things that they didnt have quite right^^

Hi Kitfox

If you've not heard the radio broadcast There are many versions of it on YouTube.
You are right in saying the first part of the show was done as a regular broadcast, They kept on interrupting the music program to give news reports.

Click the [link] to hear the broadcast.

'dabandey' is correct in saying it was America not Britain who believed the Martians had invaded.

Great picture by the way.

That's fantastic, man. Thank god you chose to base it on the recordcovers on Jeff Wayne's WOTW, I'm a big enthusiast for the whole story and music

That's exactly the same with me - it's a real frightening story and scared me as a kid!

I'd love to make it as a film the Jeff Wayne musical's way, but apparently Spielberg is doing an adaptation from the book which I'm sure wont be as good.

well at least its from the book and not from the 1950's movie. I wanna see tripods dammit!!

Oh thats so cool! I'd love to go to Horsell common!!! Its pretty cool how he based the book in an actual placem so close to where he lived. No wonder so many beople believed it was true!! he's a mass genious thats all I can say. who could have come up with a story like that in the 1800's !!!
Oh cool, I'll check out your pics right now!

2 days ago, coincidentally I was in the surrey area and I went to Horsell Common (!!) in Woking (drove past where H.G.Wells used to live) but it's just not the same as that amazing painting of the cylinder.

oh yeah, and I draw it a lot too, I have some on DA - but I drew the Handling Machine here as best I could:

Yeah I love that musical.

Attack of an advanced life form on err... on a classic(not the word)city, that reminds me of an epsiode of the Twlight Zone called "Monsters on Maple Street". But their were aliens but they just stood on a cliff and watched everyone kill each other... two words brilliant and ironic!

'Tis a Martian Tripod from the War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. And judging from the design characteristics, I'd say it's a heavily modified/upgraded version of the Jeff Wayne model.

Lets work from the back to front ay?

The cloudy background is really well done and I think that the ink running, as you said, helped this picture.
The cityscape is pretty darn cool, you got the creamy color spot on!
As for the chraracter is that a lil' crimson realising how screwed your about to become?!

Dude!
WOTW kicks ass. I remember listening to it aged 7 or 8 and being scared shitless of the record player for weeks.
In the darkness of the night I can still hear "ooooooooooooooolaaaaaaaaa" echoing across my pysche.
Amazing piece of watercolour, and its inspired me to get out my set again. Wonderful stuff.
