Me too. Most fanarts I've seen makes her look 5 times as good as the official Square art.

I see that a lot with the earlier Square games. Good or not, though, I think some of it just doesn't work as the target character. It's an opinion thing, I guess.

Well, the gothic style was just the style at the time, and perfectly fit some of the series such as FF6 and maybe even FF4. But looking at Rydia's current official FF4 art doesn't compare to the fanart out there that makes her look more complex and interesting.
Most other characters seem to be alright, except maybe Rosa, whom also seems to plain in the current official art.
