You’d be right! The spikes are retractable, and he can generate them in most any amount, size, and shape. So long as his body parts stay in contact with a surface, he can generate them from that surface too.

He can grow rosettes of spikes from the ground or the wall, so much as his hands or feet make contact with that surface.
