Description The Shortfin Mako Shark.  Also known as the Blue Pointer, Bonito Shark, and Spriglio.

A relatively large Mackerel shark, an adult Shortfin Mako grows to an average length of about 3.2 meters (10 feet), though there have been several reports of larger individuals.  Like other Lamnid sharks, the Shortfin Mako is unique in the fact that it is Endothermic (Warm-blooded).  Because of this, it feeds more often than, for example, Requiem sharks.  Shortfin Makos feed primarily on other pelagic fish like Bluefish, Mackerel, Bonito, Tuna, and have even been known to prey on Swordfish (a dangerous feat that can seriously injure or kill a Mako).  Shortfins are also known to occasionally go after other prey like Dolphins and Porpoises, Sea Birds, and Sea Turtles.

They are found throughout Temperate and Tropical offshore waters around the world.  They are known as the fastest of sharks, clocking in at 25 mph at swimming speed with speed bursts of up to 49 mph!  This speed allows them to perform spectacular jumps up to 30 feet in the air.  They are prized game fish for their fighting abilities and are also one of the most consumed sharks by humans.  They are known to be aggressive and potentially dangerous to humans, but rarely attack.  Shortfin Makos are also one of the most intelligent and fastest learning sharks, determining whether or not a diver is a threat and even allowing themselves to be pet and fed bait in some instances.

The Shortfin Mako is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.

Awesome shark there . Too bad it's being consumed too much.

It is a shame.  Such a majestic predator reduced to such an embarrassing prey status.

Thanks!

Thanks!  One of mine too!  I'd probably say the Lamniformes all contain my favorite sharks.

Damn, that's some killer footage!  I was watching a couple of Mako-chases the other day, but that one is the best I've seen.
