I actually stopped submiting traditional because I hated how the colors didn't come up like in the actual drawing. Fortunately, I found a way to take some decent pictures that don't kill the color as much : D

Yeah, I hear all the time about how scanners can really drain your stuff. The best lighting to take your pictures in is sunlight, in the mid-morning. That's the best for brightness.
I've also heard of people taking their scanned images and resaturating the colour in PS, but to me, that's digital interference and takes away from the traditional aspect even more.
