Description 2019 for me had plenty horror movie letdowns; I liked Get Out, but Us gets more contrived the more I think about it, I liked It, but Chapter 2 looking back is actually a letdown and kinda ruins my good faith for the first movie, I love Zombieland, but Double Tap is yet another corporate pointless fucking piece of trash sequel that shits on everything I love, I really like Hereditary, but I didn't like Midsummer that much. And speaking of Hereditary, I consider that along with 2016 The Witch to be the best modern horror films (no jumpscares, awful characters and the rest of the stuff I HATE in modern horror), and so I was fearing that maybe Robert Eggers could've let me down with The Lighthouse like the aforementioned titles did.

...Thankfully, with The Lighthouse, Eggers has instead taken the next step in his evolution as a filmmaker. It's great.
The Witch was a low budget, tightly put together 90 minute thing, now with The Lighthouse Eggers got a bigger budget and more resources, and he puts them on good use to deliver a film that is longer, heavier and more complex and definitely more uncomfortable.

All the aspects I appreciated in The Witch are back here: the historical accuracy and research, the bleak atmosphere, the sense of dread, a more classic direction style with long takes and great camerawork, and very little use of CGI, everything else is practical and would almost fool me it's a film from the '70s or early '80s.
And since both The Witch and The Lighthouse are set in the past, the characters can't just "call the police" or use their phones, they have nowhere to run, so it avoids a lot of plotholes or characters doing frustrating (aka lazily written) decisions I find in a lot of modern day-set horror films... and ups the dread.
The story is definitely a wilder beast than its predecessor, The Witch was pretty straight-forward, with The Lighthouse I had no idea of where the story was going, it really put me in the shoes of Robert Pattinson's character having a miserable and stressful life working for DaFoe's crazy old seaman, and the worst aspect is that both of them are VERY unreliable narrators, it's really blurry on which one of them is crazy and who's not, the way the film presents things and makes them react, makes it seem as if both of them could be lying or telling the truth, and it just ups the discomfort, stress, and sense of hopelessness, like as if we're stuck in a fever dream gone wrong.
I predict that in the future many people will make in-depth videos and analyze with scrutiny The Lighthouse's story and characters to try crack it in a similar manner you see a lot of people making video essays on whether or not Childs or MacReady are the Thing in the end.

Robert Eggers has become one of my favorite modern directors, I look up to him now, I have nothing but praise for his writing and direction, and I cannot wait to see what he'll do next.

While I'm sure people will dig this spoof I made, I still have high respect for the spoofed trailers reenacted by SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs:

Just saw this movie. Had only seen the trailer, few weeks back, but I just suddenly decided I wanted to watch it.
Its weird as fuck. I really liked it. Also has a bunch of great out-of-context lines.

Awesome work, man. Only you could pull off something this epic, Luke.

Side note, I can see the last panel, taking away the text, as the two fighting over whether CalaBeard or CalaMug is better lol
