In the mainstream comic Gwen doesn't wear those.
That is just the recent movie version that the Sony team decided to give as part of her character and design of that version of Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman that she is a drummer and a dancer.

It just kinda gets me cause I was in ballet, and I've earned the right to wear those things so I know EXACTLY what they're like. I guess the block of wood in the bottom is good to wack people with (assuming the wood doesn't snap), but other then that and aesthetics, I don't see the point (ha ha puns). But seriously, those things are stupid expensive, easy to break if you're not careful (or if you just don't have the right foot shape), and are not exactly what I'd call comfortable. Even after a few years, I never did get used to the feeling of the weird circular pad at the bottom of um. And of course, even with the proper training and strength, it's really easy to hurt yourself. I don't mean to be nitpicky, but I mean, if I were fighting crime, I wouldn't use um.
