Every morning before they left home Ziio would sit Connor down on top of her bed, his back to her chest, and tenderly brush his hair. He always insisted she tie his hair in two long braids at the front, partially so he would share something with his mother and also as an excuse to keep her nearby just a little longer. He would always giggle and twist and chatter away as she wrestled him still but today Connor was quiet and grave. He hadn’t spoken a word to her all morning.

“What’s wrong, baby?”

Connor nibbled on his bottom lips for a few moments before answering. “Kanen’to:kon said it was weird I don’t have a dad,” he mumbled under his breath and solemnly picked at small tuffs of carpet, “and not just him, all the other kids too.” Large brown eyes blinked up at Ziio, unanswered questions swimming in their depths, begging for answers. “Is it weird? I don’t want to be weird.”

Ziio instantly bundled her child up in the safety of her arms, the contact providing much needed reassurance for Connor who happily melted into the embrace. “Of course not, my child. Besides, it’s not that weird and we don’t need him anyway!”

“We don’t?”

“Not at all, we’re the perfect team without him, you and me.” Ziio leant forward to blow cool air over Connor’s ears causing him to squirm playfully in her lap.

“Ista and Ra-Ra?” (A/N: Ista = Mother)

“Ista and Ra-Ra.” She confirmed.

Connor grinned contentedly and his eyes dropped gently as he let himself drift gradually away to the soft strokes of his mother’s fingers and brush through his hair. “Ista?” Ziio hummed in answer. “What was my father like?”

Ziio stopped her brush strokes suddenly, her movements stilled for a few moments. “He was like a prince from a fairy-tale. Well-mannered, respectful,” she chuckled to herself, “if not slightly conceited.” She stopped brushing Connor’s hair and instead leant forward to wrap her arms around his tiny waist and rest her chin on his shoulder. “He wore his charisma like a fine coat, never afraid to show it off or use it. There was always something about him, something that drew people to him and charm them; he could have had anyone and instead chose me.”

Abruptly Connor pulled his mother’s arms tighter around him, causing her to jerk forward. She laughed off the collision and squeezed her son tight. “I want to meet him.” Connor conceded.

“Maybe one day.”
