Description So this little experiment was the brainchild of Chaotic Art Director extraordinaire Jason Narvaez . When coming up with this image we were both in a sorta Conan/Frazetta mindstate as to how we wanted it to look. And when it finally came out to our liking, J thought it would be interesting to take it even further by having an original Conan artist go in and add his touch to it. So we reached out to a Mr. Rudy Nebres, a very talented and well known artist who used to work on Conan (and happens to be the dad of one of our studio mates) and asked if he would take my lineart and do what he does with it, just for fun. He agreed, and this was the result.

A very different look than I've seen done with my art before, but I love it. And I learned a lot about my art as well (particularly some anatomical things I need to work on, lol).

Feel free to compare and contrast with the original:

More info on Rudy Nebres can be seen here: [link]

Fun fact, for Chaotic fans. Ever wonder where the name for the character "Nebres" came from?

I'm so jealous. You got Rudy Nebres to touch your page! I love his style and miss his stuff. Forgive me if I have no kind words for you. Nice piece though.

Ha. It's okay. Rudy does and should outshadow me. He's an art god, I'm just a lowly mortal.

I would of loved to have colored this one up too. But I wouldn't have wanted to open that door especially with all the revisions done to the one Tony and I did lol.

Hey, if you get any time you do it up now, full Frazetta-style, as a portfolio piece. You won't have any interference whatsoever.

HA!! I am old enough to remember(and love)his work!! Brings back memories of some Savage Sword of Conan mags I had that he inked over Buscema. He was the first one to make me realize how different an dramatic an inker could be.
Plus, I never seen anyone try to emulate an inker b4(I 4get who, but no one could match him!)His hatchwork is legend, so new as this is, it takes me back! Awesome Khary, this made my day.

Yeah, I think both Khary and Adrian should share more of their lineart on these.

They're amazing works of art on their own!

Rudy Nebres?

Besides Buscema and Chan Rudy is THE Conan artist.

He put in some AMAZING work on your lines.

Oh, tru. I can see the difference, the propotion of the face, a little of his right arm, and the chest as well, but you did a great job as well. ThatΒ΄s great, huh? that you learn more and more to see the changes. Keep it up ^ ^

This is sweet!
Its a shame there isn't more written about the pioneering Filipino artists from back in the day.
Rudy Nebres, Alex Nino, Tony DeZuniga, Nestor Redondo, etc. are art gods.

For real, some of those guys don't get nearly enough credit for being the pioneers (and amazing artists) that they were.

On top of that, Rudy is just a plain awesome guy to talk to in general.

That's great that you have access to a talented artist like Rudy! I started out in the comic industry working for Dell Barras, who is one of their contemporaries. I'm pretty sure Rudy would know him.
Keep the killer work coming!

Rudy is the MAN. So happy you got to work with him; I've worked with him in the past, and was a fan of his growing up. One of the best ever, imho.

What a cool idea and what a phenomenal result.
I think people should collaborate like this more often.
Having someone with a strong sence for layout do that and then get someone to do finishes.
It doesnt happen to often anymore.
I know most inkers would kill me but so much inks today ARE closer to being traces then actually improving the pencils.
And most pencilers are like control freaks and put way too much work into their pencils.
Their job is storytelling not drawing pretty originals.
I wish they would get back to how they did it back in the day when inkers had more input on the final result and pencilers would concentrate more on their storytelling.

Sorry for the long post.
But your piece inspired me to write it up

-Nic

I concur 100%.

And that's coming from someone who is a control freak penciller.

I just draw this stuff.
