I already feared it somewhat and was a bit nervous when I visited Olderdissen yesterday. When Maike wasn't there that already was a downer. Sadly we now have certainty. Maike was put to sleep yesterday morning.

She may was the strongest wolf I've ever known and definitely one of the most special ones. From 2003 to 2008 she lived with her deceased mate Ringo alone in Olderdissen, then Laika, Ronja, Smilla, Kira and Luna were introduced to them. Maike had them completely under control since then. She already had problems with her back to this time, but that did not break her authority. Oh, yes, she was a very impressive wolf. Maike often appeared to be quite grumpy and I saw her chasing (especially) Ronja through both of the two enclosures they inhabit many times. She only tolerated Laika and Luna in her close proximity. Her appearance was always dominant and confident, the tail was never low and the ears erected. And she was known for her Isengrim grin and a bad-wolf look in general, because of her scarred face.
But on the other hand I also saw her as an old female who could be gentle, too. Maikes was always alerted and kept a wary eye on her pack. After a nap she would let the young wolves rally around her submissively with a waggling tail. When I watched this she appeared to me like a stern, but solicitous grandma.

I heard that in the last days she wasn't able to stand anymore. You know how she looked in the last weeks. And her elbows were so terribly swollen. Seems like it was time to let her go. I'm sad, because I would have wished, she'd make it a bit longer. She fighted so much for her life. On the other hand I'm proud of her, because of what she was. Her strenght always impressed me. This old lady has really grown on me in the last three years, more than I have thought.

Rest in Peace, Maike, I hope you can run now without any pain but with Ringo at your side over the meadows of eternity. Goodbye.
