Anime And Manga
Introduction
You have a great story, a bunch of characters and you want to create a manga. However, where do you start? Do you have it Left->Right or Right->Left? How should you publish it (*note: some publishers may have additional requirements/restrictions)?
The process is pretty much the same for any graphic progression such as comics.
Luckily, there are a great number of tutorials to help you on your way.
Storyboarding
A storyboard is a panel or series of panels which detail the sequence of significant events in a planned scene, i.e. a rough sketch coupled with some words to describe the actions in the scene.
At this point you'd need to have an idea of whether you are making a left->right or right->left manga and your story has been separated into scenes and plot points you wish to use to drive your story.
Tutorials
Sketching
Once you have figured out the rough story, it's time to get to sketching. First you need to prepare your final layouts and edges of the paper. Typically there are margins on official manga paper to emulate. These give an idea of where the cut off points are.
Sure you do not need to worry so much in a digital sense, but some manga programs will put these in case you did want to put your manga into print. You can buy pre-marked papers with the rulers in non-photo blue and there are some templates in the tutorial list to give you the guidelines.
Non-Photo Blue Why do people make their sketches in a pale blue? This is a specific shade that scanners 'ignore' when scanning in grey-scale. So you do not need to remove your sketch lines after inking. Typically the non-photo blue comes in mechanical pencil leads of various sizes and do not smudge as easily as a standard graphite pencil.

Paneling tips for manga
Paneling is a part of Graphic design. O_- It's an art in itself, think of how you would do a collage and put together a puzzle, that's how paneling works.
You must understand the basic 2D design element:
movement, center of interest, value contrast, volume, size, perspective.... so on and on....
As for paneling.... there is no set way to do it, whether drawing the picture first, or draw the panel's first, or draw the panels and the pictures back and forth.... it's all upto the artist, as long as the result is satisfying to the artist. Just experiement and find the best way that suits you.
1. Panels must support your content: That's the m
Inking and Pen Techniques
After you have completed your sketch you can start to ink your page. You can use multi-liners, pen and ink or complete this digitally, this is completely up to the artist's preference.
Using the correct pen is important, as different pen nibs deliver different amounts of inks, digital programs emulate this as best as it can. However try not to use a ball point pen, as the ink can smear, try a felt tip instead. A cheaper pen is Staedtler Triplus Fineliner Pens, or Sakura Pigma Micron and personal favourite Copic Multi-liners. If you are going traditional pen nib and ink, the 'staples' are G, Saji and Mapping Pens, you'll also need to buy a shaft and ink pot (Copic Ink is quite nice).
This is also the stage at which you would add all the black areas, you can purchase additional brush pens to make this easier (or use the fill tool digitally).
Made a mistake? Use white ink to cover it over and start again.

Adding Screentones
Screentoning is another art in itself. Applying the correct screentone needs to be well thought out and consistent across your manga. Choosing a flashy pattern for a character's pants or jacket may distract from the story. Digitally you can easily trial and error, traditionally you are more limited, but you can at least put the tones across your page to see how they go together.
Applying a screentone can be quite fun, it comes with a sticky side that you cut a rough area then lightly apply to the paper, then you cut off the undesired amounts (if you go through the paper with your cutter just sticky tape the back). Once you have the cut out finished, stick it down more firmly.
Tutorials
Scanning
After you have finished the pages it is time for scanning. Make sure your scanner surface is clean, then place your page on the scanner and put a backing behind and close the lid, put an even distribution of weight on your scanner and scan it in.
Typically choose grey-scale and 300dpi could be enough, but you can make it more. If you are planning on colouring it, if the 300dpi scanned page is not big enough, scan it at 600dpi instead.
Clean your page from dust, rotate and crop where necessary. Apply proper Curves/Levels to make the darks darker and whites brighter.
Tutorials
Typesetting
You have your art and your page all ready, now you need to add your text.
Choose a font/fonts you wish to use (such as Wild Words or Webletter). Pay careful attention to the position of the words in your speech bubbles/thought bubbles and try to mix up using italics and bold when a different tone is to be applied (thoughts or yelling for example).

PE: Adding Text to your MangaIntroduction
You now have your manga ready for some text. As part of the panelling and story boarding process you have created the speech bubbles and have a rough idea of where your text is going to be placed.
At this point you may have hand drawn some SFX or will place these on with a font as well.
The main point is to keep it consistent across your manga, changing your font half way through is often seen as sloppy and unprofessional.Basics
Types of Text
There are many types of text in any given comic or manga, such as Normal conversational text (this is your primary text), Thoughts, Scene Queues, Background Descriptions (no text bubble or
Presentation & Useful Groups
You have your finished pages and you are ready to publish your manga. What is the best way?
This is purely up to the artist, some approaches are to have each page as a separate deviation and the comments manually link to the first page, previous page and next page.
Another approach is to use Flash or PDF to have the entire chapter/manga in one sequential file.
A new and exciting approach is to make use of Deviant Art's Motion Book Tool details here .
Useful Groups for more tutorials and tools
If you are wanting to publish your work please consider some of your decisions need to conform to their requirements. Go do some research as you may find your orientation, readability, font choices, tone choices, etc. will be part of their standards to follow.
Thank you for reading this article, a lot of the tutorials linked to are the first part of many so be sure to check out the rest of the artists tutorials.

My favourite part of making a manga is finish the work and see how beautiful it is.
I don't use screentones, is so expensive, and I do my manga traditionally, I don't have manga studio, I can't use these softwares properly because I haven't a tablet. For shading, I use pencils and I smudge it after.
At these days I don't have time to make my manga, I put 5 short pages in my gallery. I think that I'll start longer stories for my manga, I must to design some characters too.

It's a useful tutorial thanks a lot!
But to be honest turning the text into scketches is very long because you have to imagine the scenes then you have to make the linearts and the shades
It's a lot lot of work that's why some artists stop their manga after 1 or 2 episodes that's a shame
I created a manga and I prefer "clean" scketches it's the fastest way to publish episodes regularly

I always enjoy the sketching part... from then, I start to lose focus and I get frustrated cause I don't have enough time to experiment with Manga studio... thus, I end up not editing the chapters... And I have 15 chapters sketched T__T it's frustrating.
But I don't want to rush myself so I think after my uni, that's when I start to get more serious with manga making as side-line. : )
This is a great article! Thank you and for all those tutorials as well.Β

My favorite part of making a manga has to be coming up with the story and drawing the scenes filled with emotion, action, and beauty. I don't really have a favorite screen tone, but some of the basic ones are really cool when you later them (Only really works if using it traditionally). My least favorite part is story boarding. Even when I was in elementary school and was learning about it, I disliked it. I felt like (Mainly with writing type story boards) they limited my creativity and were unnessacary. But now that I want to be a mangaka, I realize just how important it is.

It's always fun to use screen tones (Especiallp with scratching). It can just be difficult and frustrating when it won't do what you want or it folds on you and wastes an entire sheet! XD

Thanks for linking my series of tutorials. Just a note--something I do make a note of... you should have the story before doing story boarding... because not having the story and then storyboarding a lack of story--it'll affect how sloppy your story board is, if you can't figure out what's important or what's not then you will have a messy panel layout and you can't bail yourself out of it easily once you've say, gotten to the inking stage and posted it. Always have the story layed out first.

You're welcome. I found some artists want to *just draw* and figure out the story later... A friend of mine said she was like that and it killed her later to try to fix it when it gained popularity. Haha. So I thought it was worth noting. ^_^

I haven't drawn many comics, except for events from my role-playing group, but it was quite fun when doing so! I didn't have many resources besides a pencil and paper, so the final form of my comics were simply in clean pencil lines (it was almost like inking, I suppose).Β
I'd say my favorite part of drawing these comics was the overall process of transforming it from a rough sketch into the finished product, up to where the images become clearly defined. Someday I want to go a little bit further into making manga though, and try my hand at screentones and other effects, and actually ink in the lines. I'd most likely work on it digitally, though.Β

Pretty much all you said applies to any form of graphic narrative. I am studying comics and graphic novels at my college, and pretty much everything you said they have talked about too in much the same way. So I don't really think this could be limited to only manga. Though comics tend to use more limited screentones and be in color more often. I still found this useful with all your resources. Thanks!

When you really boil it down, there isn't really much of a difference. Manga is simply the Japanese word for "comics," and used in the Western sense, it means "comics which were produced in Japan/by Japanese."
Due to cultural differences, each region, East and West, developed a distinct style in drawing their comics over many decades. However,Β the world has become so connected and globalized today, many Westerners started to draw comics in manga style, and vice versa. The key difference nowadays is in style, which is still very distinct between manga and Western comics.Β
If you want to refer to manga that is in written in English/other languages, and reads left-to-right, etc., you can call them international manga or Original English-language (OEL) manga. Anyone can look up those terms if they want to research more on the subject.Β

My favorite part of making a manga? Honestly, seeing it finished! Especially if it's the print edition. Just having that sense of accomplishment and being able to move on with the story.
As for tones, I really like gradient tones with texture in them... they're super pretty (though notoriously hard to find).
However, I do have some critique for this article. It's great at giving people the general tools, but it doesn't really give much advice. For instance, I would strongly discourage anyone from making a right > left manga if they ever want to see it published and seen in stores... or even if they want to be taken seriously, as harsh as that is. It's seen as amateurish and illogical in the industry; you should draw it the way your language is natively read.
I'm also learning the hard way that screentones are obsolete in print and can cause more issues than it's worth. Eliminating moire has been a pain in the butt; older printers are actually worse at handling them, and established printing places don't upgrade often, so... you can be left with a subpar product or spending money for a lot of extra proofs. It's frustrating for you, for the printer, and really just anyone involved. I'll probably keep using the "effect" type tones, but I'm seriously considering replacing all the uniform grey tones with flat color and the tone gradients with digital ones. Even for web viewing, they're a pain because they don't downsize gracefully.

Khallandra In reply to Deus-Nocte [2014-09-13 23:30:55 +0000 UTC]
I'll add that up to the article, to check with the publisher/printer what standards they have for their printing as that is a critical point for those wishing to publish their work.
It is a shame they are not supporting screentones so much.
π: 0 β©: 1
Deus-Nocte In reply to Khallandra [2014-09-13 23:50:10 +0000 UTC]
That sounds good, thanks!
And yeah, I know. :/ It really wasn't something I expected going in, but I guess it's just the nature of the beast. They were developed as a way to create grey tones when the printer could literally only print in black, but since printers have evolved past that point, I think they have trouble with patterns like that now. The real new ones are better because they're adaptable, I suppose?
The problem could even be inherent in the settings of the file or the makeup of the tone itself, but it seemed like no one at the printer I went to had ever dealt with them before, so... we were just shooting in the dark to find a solution and I barely got the copies in time for a convention I was attending.
